Kenton Bowling Club

Last week’s activities were overshadowed by the EA Singles Championship (men and novices) finals. Kenton was represented in three of the four categories.

Pippa Swift was runner-up in the Ladies’ Novices and Bill Bedford was runner-up in the Men’s Seniors. Brian Aldag successfully defended his 2016 Novice Singles title and was once again crowned Novice Singles Champion. We wish him all the best in next week’s Eastern Province Singles Championships.

Westie and his team were the winners of Wednesday’s tabs-in competition. His score of +17 (his opponents shall remain nameless to protect the innocent) was good enough to walk off with the prize money.

Supa Thursday was once again dominated by Bill Bedford (with Lee Slater). The R100 prize money was handed over by the club captain.

Friday’s attendance draw was forfeited by Dave Chalmers and will be R1 000 this Friday. Tom and Joan Spence are serving their signature dish of oxtail, mash and salad. This should be sufficient incentive to ensure a large attendance.

A freak 60-second rain shower cut Saturday’s tabs-in competition short and none of the games were completed. As a result, the prize money was carried over to last Wednesday. Duties for the week June 5-11: Bar – John Gaylard and Joanne Lawson, Tabs – Rob Croly. Events for the week June 2-8: June 3 – Social Saturday (Ultra Liquor); EP Men/Ladies Singles Finals; June 7 – Kenton-Kowie at Kenton. Birthdays for the week June 2-8: June 2 – Henry Crewe-Brown.

Kowie Bowling Club

Last Thursday we had a full green turnout of fours play for our Kenny’s Sports Bar competition.

Delene Deenik’s team of Alan Sheridan, Don Munroe and Gill Turner were in fine form to defeat Jacques Krige’s team by a full house, 10 points and a bucket full of shots, and were presented with the Kenny’s vouchers.

Runner-up on the day was Siegie Rohrs’s team, who defeated Lee Botma’s team by 9 points to 1. The rest of the games were all very close with two of these being peeled.

The club has changes to our competition format by now, playing the Megabucks competition on both Tuesday and Thursday only when we do not have sponsored competitions on these days. Saturdays will be for Snowball competition provided there is no sponsored competition. This format starts immediately.

On Thursday we played the Megabucks competition with a fair turnout for a winter afternoon with all matches being pretty close. Siegie Rohrs’s team of Tony Brown and Ron Smith performed very well to defeat Jacques Krige’s team by 8 points and a 4-shot profit. Rob Owsley’s team was in the runner-up position after defeating Delene Deenik’s team.

On Saturday, a mid-winter’s day, we had a small turnout to play the Snowball competition and they played a short game because of the cold weather. The numbers were drawn and the score that came out was “9”. Not one team came even close to that score so it rolls over to the next competition day.

On Sunday the EA Singles final was held at Kowie Club and both winner and runner-up will go to Port Elizabeth on June 3-4 to play in the Eastern Province finals at a venue to be announced. This will be announced in The Herald on Wednesday in the Bowls Column.

In the Ladies’ section Novice competition Marlene Mitchener (Albany) defeated Pipa Swift (Kenton), in the Open Ladies’ Gwen Bartlett defeated June McDougal (GBC), and in the Ladies’ Seniors Collett Reid (PA) was the winner and runner-up was Wendy Pfotenhauer (PA). In the Men’s section Novice competition Brian Aldag (Kenton) was the winner with Andrew Labuschagne (Albany) runner-up.

In the Men’s Open section final, section 1 winner Dave Freeme played section 2 winner E Daniels (Albany) and Freeme was the winner. The senior section was won by Trevor Frost (PA) and Bill Bedford (Kenton) was the runner-up. After the competition the EA president Peter Ford handed out the trophies to the winners. Duties for the week June 5-11: Greens – (Roll) Bob Ford, Mike Beaumont and Bryan Burger, Tabs – (Cash) Delene Deenik, Bar – Laurie May and Rob Sandilands.
