The monthly Pick n Pay steak night also took place during the week. First name out the drum was Trevor Lentz, followed by Lincoln Kent. Neither were present and the next draw will now stand at R500.

All members need to be reminded from time to time about the etiquette of the game of bowls.

There have been occasions when players become over-enthusiastic in a tight game and tend to overlook the finer points of etiquette, resulting in irritation to other players.

Some of the more common instances have been moving in a head when a player is on the mat preparing to deliver a bowl, while others continue talking when a player is on the mat.

These can be very off-putting and members are requested to pay special attention to paying the player on the mat the respect she/ he deserves. It is, after all, simply good manners to do so.

Another common “transgression” is when front rankers offer advice or their opinions to their third or middle pip. It is simply not their job to do this; unless, of course, they

Congratulations to David Freeme and Colette Reid on being runners-up in the Easter Province Men’s Open and the Ladies Senior Singles with Wendy Pfotenhauer coming a credible third in the Ladies’ Senior Singles.

The Mary Hobbs Ladies Pairs is ongoing, as well as the Mixed Drawn Fours.

Our entertainment committee has arranged a quiz evening on Tuesday June 20, after bowls at 6 for 6.30pm.

The criteria are as follows: six people in a team at a cost of R120 per team, ie R20 per person. Locals, visitors, friends COLLEGIATE Girls’ High travelled to Grahamstown last weekend to take on DSG in hockey and netball matches.

There was much interest and hype around this clash, especially in the hockey fixtures, as they are arguably the two strongest hockey-playing all girls’ schools in the Eastern Cape.

There were 14 hockey matches played and it was Collegiate who came out on top, picking up seven wins, while DSG won four matches and three were drawn.

The first-team hockey match lived up to all expectation as these two teams, both of whom are ranked in the top ten in SA, played with admirable intensity.

It was DSG who drew first blood, taking the lead through a brilliant solo effort from Caroline Mills, who rounded the Collegiate keeper to score.

Collegiate bounced back quickly, and a great intercept and break by Collegiate captain Harriet Bisdee in midfield set up Caitlin van Goeverden on the far post to pull the goal back.

The past week was full of high scores and high drama.

Once again bowls played a major role in many of our member’s lives. The Club Championships are progressing nicely with a couple of matches being completed during the week (see our website at www.kentonbowlingclub.com for up to date standings).

Members are urged to continue with the good effort as we are trying to complete all outstanding matches by the date of our AGM.

Wednesday tabs-in competition was won by Lionel and composed finish by Monique Titus saw Collegiate go into the break 2-1 up.

In the second half, DSG started to pull the strings in midfield, with Julie Jevon and Jenny du Toit instrumental as DSG controlled the game, with Collegiate limited to attacks on the break.

However, Collegiate defended resolutely and seemed destined to see out the win before a penalty corner, DSG’s first of the game, was won 30 seconds before time.

A well-worked variation saw DSG slide the ball to Willow Gainsford on the left post to score the equaliser in the final play of the game. The match was a great advertisement of the strength of schoolgirl hockey in the Eastern Cape, and was enjoyed by the large crowd.

In the netball fixture, it was DSG who had the better of Collegiate as they won nine of the 12 matches, with Collegiate picking up just three wins.

However, one of these victories came in the first team match, with Collegiate running out 37-18 winners. Howarth’s foursome with a shot profit of +20. This was certainly the high-score win of the week.

Supa Thursday saw Roy Wilkins’s team walk off with the Seeff Properties-sponsored prize money. Their score of 9 (out of a possible 10) was good enough to let their opponents eat dust. The trips format is very popular and was repeated on Saturday.

Social Saturday should be renamed Cupcake Carnival. The teatime treats are the subject of speculation at the start of the afternoon and appreciation towards the end.

This month’s lovely treats were provided by Jo, Johan and Neville and enjoyed by all. But bowls was not forgotten. Ultra-Express Robby’s were the sponsors of this month’s prizes. Hermie Scholtz’s trio were the deserved winners with a score of 8 (out of 10) and 17 shot profit. Their gift vouchers will come in handy when next they stock up on their tipple from Robby’s.

The Spence’s renowned oxtail and mash was on the menu for Friday’s Fabulous Feast. It proved to be very popular. We haven’t had such a good attendance at our Friday social

A well-drilled Collegiate outfit had control of the match from the first quarter and never relinquished their lead.

DSG fought valiantly throughout but too many unforced errors and the level of intensity with which Collegiate played took the game away from them. Collegiate will be well pleased with this win, having lost the first team encounter in both 2015 and 2016 between the two schools. Full results from DSG v Collegiate: Hockey

It was good to see some of our less regular members enjoying themselves and the buzz in the clubhouse was electric.

As can be expected with the high attendance, the regular Friday draw of R1000 was won. Adie Wilkins was the lucky recipient and remarked that the money will come in handy to pay for Roy’s how-to-use-my-TomTom course. After having his GPS for two years, he now knows how to switch it on!

The EP singles finals were played in Port Elizabeth over the past weekend. Our club was represented by Bill Bedford, Brian Aldag and Pippa Swift. All our players remarked on how they enjoyed the high standard of bowls.

Pippa did us proud by bringing back the Eastern Province Novice Ladies Single runner-up trophy. Well done, Pippa. It will be proudly displayed in our trophy cabinet which can do with some new blood.
