capacity but the dearth of rain means we are using the water faster than it can be replaced.
Last Wednesday was the popular bi-monthly Kenton-Kowie “skirmish” with our closest neighbours. The bowling is always competitive and enjoyable. Going in to this round we had a lead of four points. This was wiped out in this month’s round when Kowie beat us 6-2. Although we are now level on points, they lead the competition by virtue of a positive shot profit.
The Kenton-Kowie and the Bess Tweedie (ladies) competitions are usually played on the same afternoon. However, this month’s Bess Tweedie clashed with Port Alfred’s annual Itzekowitz ladies’ competition and it was decided to postpone the Bess Tweedie to a later date. Our club entered two ladies teams. They did our club proud by Ruth Low’s team winning the competition and Di Gruneberg’s team finishing a credible fifth out of 14 entries.
Thursday’s tabs-in was cancelled due to poor attendance (it was a famine day).
However, it gave Cecily Massart time to reflect on the meaning of life.
She waxed lyrically that “if you think you are too small to have an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito”.
Saturday’s weather brought back some bowlers and we had two full rinks of tabs-in.
The race was on to finish before the kick-off of the Springboks v France rugby test. We only lost the first 10 minutes of the game and enjoyed following the remainder in the pub!
Our club had entered a team in the Grahamstown’s five-a-side weekend tournament. It was the first time in seven years that they had run this competition. It has an unique format and was enjoyed by the players. Our team’s performance won’t be mentioned in dispatches. Duties for the week June 19-25: Tabs – Ruth Low, Bar – A Wolf/L Slater. Events (June 16-22): June 16 – Tabs-in on public holiday, Eastern Areas (EA) President’s Day, June 21 – Les Clarke/Doris Ford at PA. Birthdays (June 16-22): June 16 – Bill Bedford, June 18 – Bob Burrows, June 21 – Rose Chowles.
