Cosmos lift trophy in youth tournament

Nemato youngsters show off their skills at Walther Matthews

- ROB KNOWLES

THE youth of Nemato had an excellent opportunity to show off their football talents in the Youth Day Soccer Tournament, held at the Walther Matthews Stadium in the township on Youth Day, June 16.

Unfortunately, only four of the 16 U15 teams invited to the tournament competed, event organiser, Xolani Gumenge said.

“It is a shame that so few teams participated in the tournament,” he said.

“Still, we have started something we are hoping will become an annual event.”

The four teams that participated in the tournament were host team, Cosmos Football Club, along with Pubs FC, Romans FC and Tigers FC from Bathurst.

Each team played two games on point system, and the two top teams proceeded to the final. In the first round of games, Romans beat Pubs 1-0, Tigers were beaten 2-0 by Cosmos. In a high-scoring game, Pubs beat Tigers 5-3. Cosmos then played to a 1-all draw with Romans.

Cosmos and Romans then played in the tournament final, where Cosmos won 2-1 and lifted the trophy.

“We will be doing more advertising for next year’s tournament,” Gumenge said.

“But we ran this year’s tournament out of our own pockets. Next year we will be looking for sponsorship.”
