Kowie Bowling Club

LAST Tuesday we had a full turnout on A Green for our SuperSPAR-sponsored competition.

Michael Long and his team of Dave Tyrrell, Roger Purdon and Robert Sandilands were in fine form to defeat Jackie Kriel’s team by 10 points and 17 shot profit. Runner-up on the day was Dick Schuurman’s team of fours who beat Pieter Stegman’s team by another full house and 13 shot profit.

Last Thursday was a proper winters’ day and we only had a turnout of 10 players but we went ahead with the Ocean Basket Competition. The winner was Ronnie Smith and Bryan Burger who defeated Lawrie May’s pair by two points and a shot profit of 15 to be presented with the winner’s vouchers from OB. The runner-up was Pieter Stegmann’s trip who defeated Jacques Krige’s trip 22/21. It was a sneak home and they also received a runner up prize of OB vouchers. All enjoy your meal from the ocean.

On Friday June 16, Youth Day, the Eastern Areas Presidents Day Bowls Competition took place at Kowie BC with a total of 12 teams participating from the five clubs. Albany, Kenton and Kowie entered three teams each with Port Alfred two teams and Grahamstown one team. We played three games of 14 ends each in a pre-drawn competition.

The top performers were in 1st place Deon Fourie’s team (Albany) on 20 points and a shot profit of 34, in 2nd place Billy Krige’s team (Albany) 18 points +8 and in 3rd place another Albany team Kallie Calitz 16 points +14. Sally Wormald and her team provided a wonderful curried lunch with all who participated really enjoying the day of bowls.

Saturday was not a day for bowls with the wind and winter weather. We had a small turnout for the day to play Snowball competition. The number drawn for the four ends was “9” and of course no team came near to that score so it will roll over to the next competition. Duties for week June 26-July 2: Greens – (Roll) Ron Smith, (Mark) Don Kelly and Keith Kolesky, Tabs – (Cash) Linda Reynolds, Bara – John Hubbard and Don Kelly.

Port Alfred Bowling and Croquet Club

Our Personal Trust competition was won by Dallas Cowie, Chris Armitage, Jenny Frost and Wins Collett with runners-up being Trevor Frost and his team... well done.

Thanks to Carl Vermeulen from Personal Trust for joining us for a game of bowls and handing out the prizes.

Thanks to Peter Ford, president of Eastern Areas, for the most enjoyable President’s Fun Day which he hosted at Kowie Bowling Club. We also thank all the members who were involved in running the competition, ie the ladies for the catering, bar team, Charles Louw who did the scoring and last but by no means least, the green staff. Our players who participated had a great day.

The finals of the Mixed Fours and Mary Hobbs have yet to be completed. Duties for the week June 27-July 1: Tabs – Anton Strombeck and Sylvia Prevost, Bar – Noel Heale, Martin Leonard and Trevor Collett, Ironing – Dave Lang.

Kenton Bowling Club

We were privileged to welcome Andrew Murray of Dias Insurance Consultants at our prize giving after the sixth round of the monthly Dias Jackpot competition.

Andrew has been a generous and supportive sponsor of our club over the past three years. Last Wednesday’s winner was George Chowles’ team with Anthony Copeman and John Gaylard. They beat Dave Stirling’s team because of a better shot profit.

Both teams ended the day with 18 points. After six rounds, the lowest score (or nil return) has been discarded which had a marked influence on the overall standings. See the notice board for detailed results.

Windy Thursday wasn’t conducive to good bowls. Two brave rinks of players battled the elements. No winner for the tabs-in prize money was declared.

The EA Bowling Association’s annual President’s Day was held at the Kowie Bowling Club on Friday. This initiative by EABA was to recognise that many bowlers seldom have the opportunity to participate in EA competitions. It is felt that they too should benefit from the annual affiliation fees they pay the organisation.

Three teams from Kenton participated with most of the team members not having participated in EA events recently.

All the costs were carried by EABA and players did not pay green fees or pay for the lovely eats throughout the day. The day was enjoyed by all. The format, catering and organisation was of the usual high Kowie standard.

Friday night’s attendance draw was forfeited by Bruce Steele-Gray. Next week’s draw will be for R700.

Saturday was a repeat of Thursday’s weather. Two new members played their first tabs-in games. Rob Puzilewicz and Tony Phillips have “graduated” from Roy Wilkins’s All-comers Bowls project. The aim of the project is to enlist new members into our sport by a less formal manner than through the club coach route.

They are exposed to the basics of our sport through playing the game with an experienced player as mentor. That both Rob and Tony acquitted themselves admirably is an indication that the less formal approach has its merits. Duties (June 26 – July 2): Tabs – J Grobler, Bar – P Swift and B Bedford. Events (June 23-29): June 23 – PT Trips (Note: no butcher. Braai packs will be on sale); June 24 – Kowie GBS; June 28 – Peg/Horace Purdon at Port Alfred; June 29 – First round of the Club League. Birthdays (June 23-29): June 23 – Des Gallagher, Neville Green, June 29 – Sandie Rule.
