Ladies’ Results

June 27: An unseasonably warm afternoon with blustery berg winds greeted 19 players in a better-ball Stableford competition sponsored by the Ocean Basket. The course is showing clear signs of stress due to lack of rain with the hard, dry fairways providing plenty of running and shortening the course appreciably. Lindy Wright and Shirley Heny reveled in the conditions carding 51 points to easily win the competition. Second placed Glynnis Renecle and Helen Lockyear were three behind on 48 with Cindy Claasens and Shirley Heny (again) coming third with 47. The longest drive competitions were held on the third and struck by Shirley and Maureen McGarvie in the low and higher handicap sections respectively. There were no two-clubs. Maureen’s drive was closest to the pin on Top Carpets’ sixth, Shirley’s on Rosehill Driving Ranges’ eighth and Lindy was “nearest-for-two” on River Spa’s 13th.

Nobody’s drive hit the green on Wimpy’s 11th. The best individual nett scores were recorded by Lindy (65), Ingrid Griffiths (66), Shirley (67), Maureen (68), Glynnis and Helen (69). The competition on July 11 will be an Individual Stableford playing for the President’s Prize. Fresh Stop Port Alfred Mixed

July 1: Once again, Friday hosted a sponsored competition, this time to the benefit of Port Alfred High School, with many potential PAM players included in the field. This always reduces the Saturday field which was below par with just 19 players. A two-to-count Stableford alliance in three- and four-balls was, as always, the format of this mixed gender Saturday morning competition sponsored by Fresh Stop. Enjoying superb weather conditions for golf, Maureen McGarvie, Terry Harris, Bruce and Pogs Smith carded a formidable 90 points to win the competition. Lynn West, Eric Lindsay, Margie and Brian Reid came home a close second on 89. It was more of a battle for Rosie Calmeyer-Leach, Fanie Smit and Andy Manson as they managed to put a still not too shabby 83 points on their card, yet still come bottom of the points list. They became the recipients of the traditional energy drinks supplied by Fresh Stop for recuperation purposes. Both Pogs Smith and Eric Lindsay sank two-clubs on the 6th. Eric Segers (67), Eric Lindsay and Pogs Smith (68) shot the best nett rounds of the morning. Lizzie Lambrechts’ drive was closest to the pin on the eighth to win the sponsor’s bottle of wine KGB RESULTS Tuesday June 27: A rather mild and placid morning greeted a good turnout of 38 players on Tuesday. The field was drawn into eight four-balls and two three-balls to play the usual two-to-count Stableford alliance. As the morning progressed, however, berg winds sprung up in ever increasing intensity adding difficulty to the course which has become hard and fast due to lack of rain and making it play considerably shorter. Martin Lambrechts, Phillip van der Byl, Martin Weaver and Brian Shirley enjoyed the conditions the most to card 91 points and win the morning’s proceedings. The 89 points carded by Bryan Robinson, Cecil Grobler, Dale Wisener and Jimmy van Rensburg were sufficient to bank second place. Nothing seemed to work for Peter Reed, Richard Laing, Roy de Wet and Terry Harris as they managed to score a lowly 76 points committing them to entertaining the infamous Hamer en Sukkel trophy on their table at the 19th hole. Two clubs were sunk by Neil Loundar (sixth), Brian Shirley and Andy Manson (eighth). Good nett scores were recorded by Brian Shirley (67), Bryan Robinson (68), Kevin Reid and the fair Rosie Calmeyer-Leach (69).

Friday June 30: There was another cold start to the morning with temperature rising to more comfortable climes as the morning wore on. A small turnout of just 23 players drawn into one three-ball and five four-balls played in the concomitant PAHS two-to-count Stableford alliance competition. Reporting solely on the KGB, the total of 90 points scored by Cecil Grobler, Dale Wisener, Barrie Brady and Graham Findlay was sufficient to win the competition. Paul Fryer, Eric Segers, Peter Longhurst and John Muggeridge were runners-up on 89. Brian Shirley, Jimmy van Rensburg and Terry Harris had a trying morning carding a lowly 71 + 5 = 76 points to do the honours with the Hamer en Sukkel trophy at the 19th hole. John Muggeridge holed the only two-club of the morning (eighth). The best individual nett score of the morning was shot by Terry Harris (69).
