BOWLS BANTER

... what’s happening

Kenton Bowling Club

THIS week’s events were overshadowed by the club’s AGM. The preceding tabs-in bowls was well supported by 49 players who all enjoyed the trips format.

After allowing a respectable time after the game to order refreshments, the meeting was called to order. The usual president’s, financial and captains’ reports were tabled and approved by the members. Tony Mann was awarded an honorary life membership for his outstanding work and longstanding service to the club.

A motion to extend the days our greens are open, to six days (Tuesday – Sunday) and move our mid-week tabs-in bowls to Tuesday, was voted down. A second motion for the greenkeeper to make a green available on Tuesday afternoons for bounce games, matches and practice, was passed unanimously. The 2017-18 committee is headed by Roy Wilkins as president. Full details of the composition of the committee can be found on the “Contact Us” page of our website at www.kentonbowlingclub.com. The “bring-a-plate” social after the meeting was enjoyed by all.

Seeff Supa Thursday was won by Rob’s Robbers. Their skip, Rob Croly gratefully accepted the prize money sponsored by Seeff Properties. The Club League’s fourth round was completed as part of the Supa Thursday competition and Rob’s Warriors are in the lead with 6 points, closely followed by Westie’s Warriors on 4 points. With two rounds to go it is still anybody’s title.

Friday’s R1300 attendance draw was forfeited by Joan Grisdale. Next week’s prize money increases to R1400, the equivalent of 140 pints of beer at our pub. We expect all the beer drinkers to be in attendance next week!

A special fun day was organised in support (in vain, it turned out to be) of the Lions playing in the Super 16 finals last Saturday. Social Saturday tabs-in bowling commenced at 12 noon. Unfortunately, the rain put paid to the usual competition (sponsored by Robbie’s Ultra Liquor) and it was decided to postpone the competition to this coming Saturday. People contributed tasty snacks to accompany the after-bowls refreshments. There was sufficient to take us up to the Big Game’s kick-off.

The braai fires were ready after the disappointing result and soon the smell of grilled meat drifted through the clubhouse. It was a pity that the rugby selectors were not present around the braai fires. They would have gained valuable insight in to players’ abilities and strategies on how to beat the New Zealanders in future. All-in-all, it was a lovely day. Thanks to all the helpers.

Our Guido’s monthly competition was won by Noel Heale, Stan Weyer, Rory Mason-Jones and Ben Nieuwoudt. Well played.

The Club Mixed Trips was won by David Freeme, Maureen Heale and John Gie – congratulations – runners-up were Trevor Frost, Eddie Senar and Sue Purdon.

A successful trips competition, sponsored by Tommy and Rita Browne, was played on Saturday after a delay of an hour due to the welcome rain. The competition was won by Rosemary Wood, John Bennett and Jim Haswell. Thanks to all who participated as well as to the members who were involved in the running of the competition, ie, the men’s captain, ladies who did the catering, the bar and green staff. Last but by no means least, a big thanks to Tommy and Rita for their continued sponsorship.

The EP Men’s and Ladies’ Pairs played over the weekend resulted in Jane Armitage and Adele Wood taking third spot and Colette Reid and Wendy Pfotenhauer being fourth overall. Well done ladies.

Please remember to attend the AGM on Tuesday August 15 after bowls!

Kowie Bowling Club

First Tuesday of the month is Megabucks day and we started last week in a warm berg wind.

The draw on the day was very close to perfect with all games being very closely contested. Winner on the day was Bob Ford’s team of Don Munro, Basil Clarke and Claire Bell who defeated Pieter Stegmannn’s team by 8 points to 2 and a shot profit of 8. The runner-up was Mike Beaumont’s fours who defeated Siegie Rohrs’s team by 8 to 2 points and a shot profit of 3. Only the winner receives the ‘big bucks’. The other games all shared skins and one game ended in a peel.

Last Thursday we played Megabucks again and there was a fair turnout for tabs bowls, seeing as we had the start of our Men’s Senior Singles and the final of our Ladies’ Novice Singles being played.

The Megabucks was won by Mike Tomlinson’s team of Keith Stephenson (visitor from Niew Bethesda) and Linda May beating Jackie Kriel’s team in a very close match 9 points to 1 and a shot profit of 5.The runner-up was Tony Brown’s team of trips who defeated Jonine McFarlane’s team by 8 points to 2. Our Ladies’ Novice Champion is Linda Reynolds who defeated Sally Wormald in a 24-end game that was hard fought.

The weekend arrived with the promised weather. It was wonderful to have a bit of rain but with it came the cold. At tabs-on Saturday we had just five people turnout for bowls. The competition, Guido’s-sponsored, was held over for a later date.

Kowie sent three teams of trips to the Tommy and Rita Browne Competition at Port Alfred which was also affected by the weather. After a delayed start we played the competition and none of our Kowie teams featured in the prizes. It was a very poor turnout by the district. Albany Club sent one team, with our three teams and Port Alfred with their 10 teams making up the field. Port Alfred kept all the prizes at home for this one and we thank Tommy and Rita for their continued generous sponsorship.

This upcoming weekend will be the start to the Districts Trips Competition, the men playing at Albany Club and ladies will play at the Kowie Club. On the last weekend of the month the Ladies’ Mini Districts will take place over three days at the Albany Club. The EP Pairs finals took place at The Woods Club and the Men’s Section was won by Hennei Slabbert and Dave Morton of the Woods, with H Killian and A Paris as runner-up. The ladies’ section was won by Lorenza and Sandy Smart, but I do not have the ladies’ runner-up. Duties for week August 14 – 20: Greens – (Roll) Tony Brown, (Mark) Rob Turner and Dave Tyrrell, Tabs – (Cash) Margaret Segmann, Bar – John Knepscheld and Judy Hunter.
