LADIES’ RESULTS

August 1: The warm start to the day had turned chilly by lunchtime with gusty westerly winds blowing in behind a mid-morning cold front. A total of 23 players braved the conditions to play an Individual Stableford sponsored by Viv Jordan. Sue Roll netted a fine 69 and scored 39 points to win the competition. Lady captain Wendy Counihan, also netting 69, counted out Kim Gardner into third place, both players carding 37 points. Bridget McNellis made 2-club on Wimpy's 11th after her drive was closest to the pin on this hole. Helen Lockyear was closest on Top Carpet's 6th and Dee Jones-Phillipson on Rosehill Driving Range's 8th. Margie Siegers’ second shot on River Spa's 13th was nearest the pin “for two”. The longest-drive competitions were held on the 12th and struck by Kim and Sonia Reynolds in the lower and higher handicap sections respectively. The competition on August 15 will be a Bonus Bogey playing for the Atherstone Cup.

KGB RESULTS

Tuesday August 1: The weather changed in an instant mid-morning when the northerly hot and prickly berg winds suddenly swung through 90 degrees to yield close to gale force, chilly westerlies. A total of 30 players attended the early-morning draw to form 10 3-balls and play the usual 2-to-count Stableford alliance. The 92 points carded by John Ralph, George Lake and Heinz Czepluch outstripped the rest of the field to easily win the competition. In fact second placed Derick van Harmelen, John Dell and Hugh Holmes were all of seven points behind on 85. The windy conditions must have got to (1) Cecil Grobler, Len Bohnen and Graham Findlay as well as (2) Paul Fryer, John Abbot and Mike McNamara as both covies struggled to score just 72 points, thus sharing the dreaded Hamer en Sukkel trophy at the 19th hole. Man of the morning John Ralph's recent hot form continued as he shot a magnificent nett 62. John Dell also enjoyed his nett 65 as did Heinz with his nett 68. Colin Mavuso grossed a superb 69 in the difficult conditions and in so doing birdied the par three 6th. Eric Segers made a 2-club on the 11th to collect the funds in the kitty for his team.

Friday August 4: The morning turned out to be mild, mainly overcast and windless, ideal conditions for golf. The field of 27 was erroneously drawn into five 3-balls and three 4-balls to play the usual 2-to-count Stableford alliance. Russell Warren, Mike Beaumont, Jenny and John Ralph combined well to card 93 points and win the morning's proceedings. Kevin Reid, John Abbot, Martin Lambrechts and Terry Harris came home second with 91. A not-too-shabby 84 points was nevertheless insufficient to avoid the notorious Hamer en Sukkel trophy which consequently adorned the 19th-hole table of Andy Barnes, Tim Leach and his fair wife, Rosie. Tom Tagg sank the only 2-club of the morning (8th). Len Bohnen shot a great nett 65 with other good nett scores being recorded by Chris Niebieszczanski (68), Tom Tagg, John Crandon, Kevin Reid, Jenny Ralph and Russell Warren (69).
