Local photographer wins regional competition

- JON HOUZET

AFTER first winning the Talk of the Town ES Young photo competition, Tony Mitchell’s photo, Dawn Fishermen, has been chosen as the ultimate winner of the regional photographic competition between Talk of the Town’s sister newspapers, The Rep in Komani and Go! & Express in East London.

Phillip Prinsloo of PDP Photography and Phillip Prinsloo Wildlife and Fine Art Photography picked the winner. He chose Mitchell’s photo for its composition, which he called “fantastic – all the elements work together; great use of leading lines (the pier leads the viewers’ eyes straight into the image, the fishing rod straight up to the point of the light, and the size of the fishermen and light compared to the breaking wave gives you the size and power of the wave; the

exposure is one of the first things that stood out and this image would not have worked if the subjects weren't underexposed, creating the silhouette; great use of rule of thirds, subjects are not centred, once again coming back to the composition placing the subjects in the right positions; sharpness – great use of your f-stop – the image is nice and sharp, though the image will have a bit of blur in the background, creating nice depth of field.”

Mitchell, who said he has been doing photography for 35 years, is originally from Roodepoort and retired to Port Alfred about a year ago.

To take his winning photo, he used a Canon EOS 1Ds Mk II, which is about 10 years old, and a 70-200 f2.8 zoom lens.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever won anything for my photos,” an elated Mitchell said.
