BOWLS BANTER

-

Port Alfred Bowling and Croquet Club THE Radue Competition, played last Tuesday, was won by Colette Reid and Noelene Kirsten.

Second place went to Jane Armitage, Sue Purdon and Garnett Westley with John Bennett, Hilary Allen and Russel Geard in third place.

Congratulations to the Eastern Areas (EA) Men’s teams who played in the Mini-District Tournament for coming second overall. A special mention goes to David Freeme, Hein Strombeck, Jaques Krige and Mario Agnew on winning the individual trophy. Well done to you all.

The Doris Ford resulted in two wins for Kenton and one win for Port Alfred. Well played, Kenton ladies.

The Colleen Timm and Moore Shield, played at Port Alfred on Saturday was won by the Kowie ladies’ and Port Alfred men’s teams. One more round to be played this year. Congratulations to the winners.

Please remember to bring a plate of snacks on Tuesday October 10, when we celebrate birthday night. Don’t forget to join us for bowls on Friday October 6 at 5.30 for 6pm, followed by a light meal. Come and enjoy the evening with us – there are prizes to be won! Duties for the week ending October 14: Tabs – Vic Wicks and Wendy Pfotenhauer, Bar – Noelene Kirsten and John Hodges, Ironing – Gordon Goff. Kowie Bowling Club Last Tuesday, we played in dreadful windy conditions. The hill behind the club house did not protect us from the west wind. We played on B next to the road and the wind was swirling so much that the wind sock ended up tied in knots.

With an excess of 30 players we played the Kenny’s Pub Competition on five rinks. Stan Richter’s trip of Trevor Lentz and Gerald Mills beat Michael Beaumont’s team by nine points and a five-shot profit. They had shared the second skin and the runner-up was Pieter Stegmann’s team of fours who defeated Michael van der Sandt’s team by eight points to two and a shot profit of 10. Only the winner received the Kenny’s voucher on the day. The rest of the games were all very close affairs and could have gone any way.

Last Thursday, Kowie travelled to Kenton to play the President’s Chair competition which was the second of the games for this year and Kenton have won both matches to retain the “chair” until next year. We only won two of the six games of the day. Our winners were Lucile Keyter’s team and Pieter Stegmann’s team for our four points to Kenton’s eight points and a positive shot profit of 10. We also had a very small turnout for social bowls at home with no competition being played.

For Tabs bowls on Saturday we had a turnout of 36 bowler playing trips and Eddie Hoseck’s team was the biggest winner. Considering we had one team at Hofmeyer and four teams playing at Port Alfred this was a very good turnout in perfect weather. The Snowball competition was played and with a healthy purse of R200-plus. Dave Tyrrell’s team had the correct score to share among Ron Smith and Sue Conacher.

On Saturday, the Colleen Timm and Moore Shield’s third round was played at Port Alfred club. Our ladies had a good day with Delene Deenik winning and Jackie Kriel peeled their games for Kowie ladies winning the day. Among our men’s teams, Jacques Krige’ team won his game and Stephen Minnaar lost his game with Port Alfred winning both their games to be the top side on the day. Overall position is Port Alfred on seven points and 22-shot profit with Kowie next on six points and -6-shot profit, and Kenton following on 5 points and -16-shot profit.

We had two teams go to Grahamstown Club to play in their GBS Champagne Classic on Sunday and the team of Mike Tomlinson, Jackie Kriel, PeeWee Tomlinson and Bob Ford won the competition with Pieter Stegmann’s team in the lower placings.

Duties for week October 9-15: Greens – (Roll) Tony Brown, (Mark) Rod Gradwell and Mike Beaumont, Tabs – Jonine McFarlane, Bar – Bob Ford and Jonine McFarlane. Kenton Bowling Club This past week was our competition week. Our club participated in no fewer than four competitions involving our neighbours from Port Alfred. These competitions are always competitive but are played in the usual friendly spirit. Three of the competitions are played over several rounds through the year. The eventual winner is the club with the highest aggregate score at the end of the season. Wednesday September 27 – Doris Ford It was the Port Alfred ladies’ turn to travel to Kenton. At the start of this round, our club was trailing by two points with a shot deficit of 32. Our side (three teams) did well by beating the Port Alfred side 2:1, thus scoring four points versus the two of Port Alfred. The year-to-date standing is: both sides have 21 points but Port Alfred has the edge with a total shot profit of 31. The remaining three rounds in the competition will be crucial to both sides for year-end honours. Thursday September 28 – President’s Chair

This afternoon we were host to six teams from Kowie Bowling Club. The winner of the round gets to keep (or take home) the colourful “President’s Chair”. The colour scheme of the chair would have done Joseph’s brothers proud when they made the “dream coat”.

Like in March earlier this year, the Kenton side was too strong and beat our neighbours by 4:2 (shot profit+10). We therefore qualified to retain the chair until the next year. The charming piece of furniture is on display in our clubhouse.

Friday September 29 – Fabulous Feast Almost 40 of our members enjoyed the Fabulous Feast provided by Marlene Franklin. This monthly event and our monthly steak braais have become very popular and are well attended. The bonus of a possible win of the attendance draw is an added attraction. This week’s jackpot of R600 was won by Willem van Rensburg. John Davis stocked up his liquor cabinet by winning the whiskey draw. Dave West’s regular lecture on the position of the stars wasn’t missed too much (he was gallivanting in Graaff-Reinet).

Saturday September 30 – Moore Shield and Colleen Timm

Our ladies’ and men’s sides travelled to Port Alfred for these quarterly competitions. Like the Doris Ford and Les Clarke, these competitions run over the course of the year with the eventual winners being the side with the highest aggregate score. After Saturday’s games, our ladies are leading with eight points, followed by Kowie on seven points and Port Alfred bringing up the rear with three points. After a disappointing performance on Saturday, our men side dropped to third place on five points, behind Port Alfred (seven points) and Kowie (six points). With still one round to be played any of the three men’s teams can still win the competition.

Duties (October 9-15): Tabs – A Wolf, Bar – The Bowkers. Events (October 5-12): 5 – Peg/Horace Purdon at Kowie, 7 – Ultra Liquor Social Saturday, 11 – Dias Jackpot. Birthdays (October 5-12): 10 – Marietjie Copeman
