LADIES’ RESULTS September 26: Despite strong, icy cold westerly winds blowing at full blast, 24 members of the fairer sex turned out last Tuesday afternoon to play a better-ball Stableford with the Gardner Trophy at stake. Lynette Harbrecht and Heather van Harmelen powered their way to card 45 points and win the afternoon’s proceedings and the coveted trophy. Kirsten Dales and Gail Aschmann counted out Maureen McGarvie and Glynnis Renecle to take the runners-up slot. Maureen proved to be “queen of the par threes” by sinking two-clubs on both Top Carpet’s sixth and River Spa’s 13th after being closest to the pin on both holes. Bridget McNellis’ drive was nearest on Rosehill Driving Range’s eighth with Lynn Lake doing likewise on Wimpy’s 11th. The longest drive competitions were held on the third and struck by Margie Siegers and Lynette Harbrecht in the lower and higher handicap sections respectively. The competition on October 10 will be an Individual Stableford for the Settler’s Cup sponsored by Viv Jordan. Fresh Stop Port Alfred Mixed September 30: A beautiful morning for golf attracted 28 players of mixed gender to the RPAGC on Saturday morning to be drawn into seven four-balls in Fresh Stop’s usual two-to-count Stableford alliance. There was only one all male covey on the course and Warren Solz, Fanie Smit, Philip van der Byl and visitor Graham Tyson from Bathurst in Australia turned out to win the competition after carding 90 points. Lizzie Lambrechts, Bryan Robinson, Paul and Sandy Fryer came home second with 88 after counting out Barrie Brady, Dee Jones-Phillipson, Bruce and Pogs Smith on the same score. The weeks energy drinks were hotly contested, but finally were awarded to James Weisters, Heather van Harmelen, Donald and Maureen McGarvie who counted out two other covies on 82 for the lowest score of the morning. Barrie (66) and Ronel Hough (67) both carded great individual nett scores and Pogs Smith’s drive on the 8th won her the sponsor’s bottle of wine for being closest to the pin on this hole. Sandy Fryer holed a 2-club on the same hole. KGB Results Tuesday September 26: As if on order, knowing that the ladies were to play later in the afternoon, the predictable cold and gusty westerly wind arrived to greet the 27 players who entered the draw to play a Stableford Alliance two-to-count. Conditions were made even more difficult with the recently fertilized greens adding to the testing elements. Scores reflected the trials and tribulations experienced by all with the coveys of Mike Stadler, Chris Niebieszczanski, Andy Stembridge and Paul Fryer along with Jimmy van Rensburg, Dale Wisener, Barrie Brady and Len Bohnen sharing first place on what would normally have been a very moderate 79 points. Finding the going even tougher John Crandon, Martin Lambrechts, Martyn Weaver and Brian Shirley limped home with 67 points to celebrate the dubious honour of receiving the Hamer en Sukkel on their table at prize giving. No nett scores under 70 were achieved, nor were there any two-clubs on the par 3s to underline the struggles. Friday September 29: Thirty-one players turned out for Friday’s draw in perfect weather conditions for golf. But it was not to last. By 9.30am the westerly winds had begun to pump at gale force and continued for the rest of the day, literally blowing many players “away”. A two-to-count Stableford alliance was the format of choice. Despite the conditions, Andy Manson shot a nett 67 to lead his covey of Barrie B Brady, Rustle Warren and Dave Curran to victory with 91 points. Just one point in arrears, Mike Beaumont, Les Bohnen, Bruce Tucker and Brian Shirley took the runners-up slot with 90. Bedraggled, blown apart and disheveled, Bob Shaw, Eric Segers, Jan Immelman and Terry Harris succumbed to the conditions, surrendered to the golf gods and consequently taking charge of the dreaded Hamer en Sukkel trophy at the 19th hole after carding a lowly 71 points. John Muggeridge and Mike Beaumont both netted 69 and James Lobban holed a two-club on the 11th.
