THE finals of the Ladies’ Senior Singles and Men’s Open Singles were played last week.

Congratulations to the winners, Jane Armitage and Trevor Frost, as well as to the runners-up, Jenny Frost and David Freeme.

The Personal Trust competition was won by David Freeme and Jane Armitage. Second place went to Rosemary Wood and John Bennett and third place to Lynda Schoning and Lynton Perry – well done all!

The next round of the Doris Ford and Les Clarke competitions will be played against Kenton on Wednesday October 25 at Port Alfred, and we wish good bowling to our players. Duties for the week ending 28th October 28: Tabs – Ron Orford and Jools Fraser, Bar – Chris Armitage, Phil Taylor and Colette Reid, Ironing – Colin Barnard.

Last week’s ideal weather and the challenge of improving one’s standing in the Dias Insurance Consultants Jackpot, brought out 46 players in the Wednesday tabs-in competition.

The results of the penultimate round promise an exciting finish to the annual honours and prize monies.

This year the total prize money is R1680 with the first prize being R670. The top three contenders are within five points of each other with Bill Bedford still in the lead with 126 points, closely followed by Ruth Low (122 points) and Addie Wolf (121 points).

The name Gerald is derived from a Germanic name meaning “rule of the spear”. The Normans brought this name to Britain. Though it died out in England during the Middle Ages, it remained common in Ireland. It was revived in the English-speaking world in the 19th century.

Unfortunately for our own Gerald Roxburgh, the spear didn’t “rule” for him last Friday. He forfeited the weekly attendance draw by not being present when his number was called up. To make matters worse, Jenny missed receiving a complimentary Kenton Bowling Club pen when she was not present when her number came up.

Three of our teams participated in the Kowie Classic over the weekend. Bill’s team (Lionel, Rodney and Brian) lost two of their four games in the last end (somewhat reminiscent of the Kings in the Super Rugby competition). None of our teams finished in the prize money but gave a good account of themselves.

We have started preparations for next year’s Kenton Business League with the help of Dias Insurance Consultants. We have set ourselves a target of 24 teams. Invites for entries will be posted this week and we are hopeful of obtaining a positive response. We are using this year’s event as a fundraiser for the A Green Lights Project.

Duties (October 23-29): Tabs – S Bellingan, Bar–P Swift/B Bedford. Events (October 19-26): 20 – Personal Trust Trips, 20 – Steak Braai, 25 – Doris Ford at PA, 25 –Les Clarke at PA. Birthdays (October 19-26): 21 – Jenny Roxburgh, 21 – Dennis Stirk.

Last Tuesday’s good turnout in fine weather for our “SPAR Day”-sponsored competition with Jacques Krige’s team of fours, Margaret Stegmann, Ron Smith and Gill Turner being in fine form to defeat Mike Long’s team by a full house 10 points and plenty of shot profit.

The runner-up position went to Rodney Gradwell’s team of fours for defeating Keith Kolesky’s team by nine points to one and a large shot profit. Only the winners receive the Spar voucher for this competition.

On Thursday after intermittent rain through the morning, our green keeper closed the greens at 12.30pm.

Last weekend was our Kowie Men’s Classic with a record field of 28 teams entered in the comp. The Mowbray team (Cape Town) arrived on Friday afternoon and played in our bounce games with us. We had 15 of these teams from outside our Eastern Areas district, some of the furthest towns being Sedgefield and Burgersdorp.

After Round 2, the top three teams were Graham Enslin (PA) with full points and the next two teams were Brill and Morrison (both Old Selbornians) having dropped two points each.

After play, the fires were lit and the T-bone steaks were brought out and many enjoyed a windy evening around the fire.

On Saturday, we played in the worst gale force east winds imaginable and Sunday dawned to a far more pleasant day ideal for bowls. For Round 3, the top performers were Keith Kolesky (Kowie), Colin Lotter (Kidds Beach) and Bill Krige (Albany) – all winning full points. The overall position was the two Old Selbornian teams on top and in third position was Naas Vermaak (Hoffmeyer).

Then the spectators started arriving for the final round and were entertained by some superb bowling. The prize-giving was held in a packed hall with Kevin Cree of our main sponsor Investec presenting the prizes.

The cash prizes went to fourth place Clive Bartlett (Albany), third place Paul Spriggs (Westview), second place Naas Vermaak (Hoffmeyer) and the winner for the second year was Neil Brill (Old Selbornians), having only dropped two points for one skin lost.

Congratulations must go to president Peter Ford who started this competition seven years ago and it has grown into one of the most prestigious competitions in the district. Peter, you have an exceptional team at Kowie Bowls backing you, well done.

On the October 28-29 weekend, Kowie Bowls will be hosting the BUCO Trips Competition which will be attended by all six of the Eastern Areas clubs starting at 1pm on the Saturday. Duties for week October 23 – 29: Greens – (Roll) Eddie Hoseck, (Mark) Ron Smith and Don Munro, Tabs – Delene Deenik, Bar – Eddie Hoseck and Siegie Rohrs.
