Nomzamo Wolves take on PAHS in cricket
One win, one loss each in first season encounter
ON A very windy Saturday, the Nomzamo Wolves and Port Alfred High School faced each other for the first time this cricket season.
Spirits were high and the sound of the Nomzamo supporters’ wolf whistles rang out across the field.
In the first match, the Nomzamo second team took on the PAHS U15B team. The Wolves’ seconds won the toss and elected to field first.
Nomzamo played well and came within 10 runs of victory but could not match the more polished performance from the PAHS team, ably led by captain Kyle Doyle, who was awarded the Man of the Match accolade for his match-winning bowling figures of 4 wickets for 1 run from 3 overs.
What made the match particularly exciting was the fact that both teams fielded female players, and girl power was certainly on display during the game.
Monja Botha of Port Alfred showed she was no slouch with either bat or ball, and Abongile Bavuma of the Nomzamo Wolves’ second team excelled in her bowling, finishing with figures of 4 wickets for 11 runs in 4 overs. Final scores: PAHS 98 all-out, Wolves 89 all-out.
In the main event, the Wolves won the toss and elected to bat first.
Despite a sluggish start, the Wolves’ middle order put on a batting master class with Tony Faku and Shacquille “Kilo” Thomas both scoring half centuries.
Tony showed little respect for the Port Alfred bowling attack and the crowd of supporters were treated to a rain of sixes. Kilo seemed to find the boundary with ease, scoring a multitude of fours. At the end of the first innings, The Wolves had amassed 265 runs for 6 wickets.
PAHS were quickly on the back foot due to the superb opening spell from opening bowlers Athabile “Tower” Ngwenda and Shacquille Thomas.
At the end of play, PAHS were all out for 92 with Shacquille Thomas taking 5 wickets to go with his half century. He was undoubtedly the Man of the Match.
All the teams are eagerly looking forward to the re-match sometime in the near future.
