Fresh Stop Port Alfred Mixed

October 21: A glorious morning greeted the 26 players who turned out to play the weekly Fresh Stop mixed two-to-count Stableford alliance competition. Warm sunny skies and little troubling wind set the scene as the players were drawn into (mostly) mixed gender covies of which two were three-balls and six were four-balls. Barrie B Brady, Fanie Smit, Mo Marsay and Nick Oosthuizen came home with the best score of the morning, a competition winning 88 points. Runners-up Martin Lambrechts, Mark Maritz, Lynn West and Heather van Harmelen came home second with 87 points. The week’s Energade drinks, donated by the sponsors for recuperative purposes, were handed to Angela Trollip, Brent Thorpe, Glynnis Renecle and Derek Sinclair who collectively only managed to put 82 points on their card. The most outstanding moment of the morning came when Martin Lambrechts drove his first ball into the bush on the par three sixth only to hit a perfect second into the hole, a perfect “second hand” ace. Visitor from East London Angela Trollip shot a great gross 79. The best nett scores were recorded by Eric Segers (68), Hein Barnard, Lizzie Lambrechts, and Lynn West (69). Two clubs were holed by Hein (sixth), James Weisters and Barrie Brady (11th). Glynnis’ drive on the eighth was closest to the pin to win the sponsor’s bottle of wine.

KGB Results

Tuesday October 17: To say that the westerlies blew on Tuesday morning is to understate the conditions by some distance. Occasional short showers did not help. There is a saying that where there is no sense, there are no feelings. Nevertheless, twenty-three theoretically sensitive crazies left their warm beds to head for the RPAGC on the day in question and take part in a two-to-count Stableford alliance whilst trying to ignore the challenging elements. They should have known better. With a score that would normally be more befitting for the Hamer en Sukkel, Russel Warren, Roger Kidson, Bob Shaw and Paul Fryer accumulated 82 points to win the competition. One point in arrears, Peter Reed, Graham Findlay, John Dell and Hugh Holmes filled the runners-up spot on 81. The inglorious Hamer en Sukkel occupied the 19th hole table of Eugene Erasmus, Cliff Roberts, Andy Manson and Heinz Czepluch having carded an ultra-low 69 points. There were no exceptional rounds, nor par three birdies during the morning.

Friday October 20: The KGB joined in the Damant Lodge fund raising day two-to-count Stableford alliance and 37 of its players entered the draw for this worthy cause. Playing conditions were good with moderate, cool westerly winds countering a warm and bright sunny sky. Only the KGB results are given here. Mark Warren, John Muggeridge and Brian Shirley really enjoyed their morning out on the course by carding 85 + 5 = 90 points to win the KGB competition. Just one point in arrears, Bob Shaw, Roger Kidson, Richard Farndell and Tom Tagg made the runners-up position their own on 89. Four covies on 80 were relieved to find Bryan Robinson, Peter Longhurst, Andy Manson and Mike Beaumont having a difficult day as they came in with 79 points on their card, insufficient to avoid sharing the 19th hole with the dreaded Hamer en Sukkel. Gavin Richards sank the only two-club of the morning (sixth). The best nett scores were recorded by Brian Shirley (68), Gerald Churchley and Martin Lambrechts (69).
