Kenton architect firm wins award

-

LOCAL architects FD Theron were rewarded for their design and construction of a luxury home in Kenton-on-Sea recently by being awarded a prestigious regional award by the South African Institute of Architects, the first one ever in the Ndlambe area.

“This is a very important award and brings prestige to the area and firmly places us on the map as an important eco-tourism area,” FD Theron’s Chris Hattingh said.

On the site of her old family home in Kenton, Margie Hidden had the brand new luxury holiday home built to enable her to still feel that sense of nostalgia, but in better appointed surroundings.

The home is designed to blend into the environment and has been constructed to give a living outside while living inside feel about it.

Hidden said: “We used indigenous plants to keep the flow with the bush between the building and the river.”

The new family home is packed with environmentally friendly and cost-saving items to ensure the Hidden family and friends can holiday without the hassle of too much domestic work spoiling the fun of the holiday.

“As this is our family holiday home, it was important to me that we had a lot of different areas for different age groups and generations to enjoy. Even though I want the house to be fun and easy to live in, I wanted it to have a bit of luxury as well,” Hidden said.

With ocean-facing decks, glass walls, crystal chandeliers and an abundance of mod cons, the house is perfectly positioned to offer those within a luxurious escape from the pressures of everyday living.

As with every build, a great deal of coordination and cooperation needs to be achieved to create the ideal home. In the case of House Hidden, FD Theron employed various experts in their respective fields to bring their vision to fruition.

From stylish kitchens, to elegant but comfortable living areas, and even to the 12 en-suite bedrooms, House Hidden is a design and execution that stood out among the other entries and deservedly won the coveted award.

Hidden was looking to recapture the spirit of her childhood with this house. Her favourite conversation-starter is the deck.

“I love that I can watch the sea, the river, the boats and fishermen, and the children playing and swimming,” said Hidden as she reminisced.

“I can’t wait for winter, to sit around the fire on a cold, rainy day. When moving around this area, cooking, eating or relaxing, I’m always in touch with the tides and river activities. This house immediately becomes home when we unlock the front door, open the curtains and relax into the ebb and flow of life at Kenton.”
