TALK OF THE TOWN/ MY POND HOTEL QUIZ NIGHT RAISES R10 500 FOR SOUP KITCHEN

- JON HOUZET

THE Port Alfred Soup Kitchen benefitted once again from the enthusiastic participation of more than 80 people in the latest Talk of the Town/ MyPond Hotel quiz last Thursday night.

Twenty-one teams of four entered the quarterly quiz, which had been postponed from December.

Wits were sharpened, with some faring better than others in the various sections, including geography, famous faces, food and wine and music video clips.

Each team could choose a section on which to play their joker, and double their points in that section. Wise teams played to their strengths, like world travellers who chose geography, and the Rotary Rockers must be commended for knowing their movie stars of the golden and silver age of cinema.

It appeared most teams missed out on reading comics in their youth, and came unglued on the section on superheroes, scratching their heads at names like Hal Jordan or trying to remember the name of Wonder Woman’s alter ego.

Even the youngsters from Stenden, part of the new generation who have been introduced to these characters through movies and TV shows, were at a loss. It was left to Drie Latte en ‘n Platte to score a solid 10 out of 12 on that round.

The Stenden students were at least pleased they surpassed the efforts of the Stenden staff on the quiz in general, and were owed drinks because of it.

The music video clips all had the same theme – they had the names of places in the song titles, which helped some, but stymied others.

Overall it was an enjoyable evening with great food laid on by MyPond Hotel, and sponsored by Stenden.

Fantastic prizes were donated by MyPond, The Royal St Andrews Hotel, Graeme Kelbrick of the Lady Biscay, Graze by the River and Sue Gordon for the Classics at the Castle show this weekend.

Debra Harris of the Soup Kitchen said the event raised R10500.

“This is truly fantastic and ensures that we are able to fill many more empty tummies with a hearty meal,” she said.
