WHY indigenous? Witbos Nursery says that indigenous plants are the answer to a water wise garden. Many of the beautiful indigenous plants of the Eastern Cape are still largely undiscovered and certainly underutilised. The challenge is to create your own unique garden in tune with nature.

The nursery has a number of ground covers for sunny and shady areas and climbers for screens and fences that are very adaptable and hardy like canary creepers, black-eyed Susan, the baboon grape and the hiccup nut.

There is also a wide range of hedge plants such as dogwood that make a lovely soft hedge in a shady area. Security is a major consideration in any garden today so look no further than the num num

Kei apple or – for really difficult areas – the dune sour berry or the small knobwood.

Witbos Nursery also has a number of feature trees in stock. The quar

is just starting to flower and the Dune soapberry does very well in a pot. Milkwoods make good windbreaks and the nursery carries trees taller than 2m. It also has aloes ranging in size – from the aloe striata to the tree aloe. No Eastern Cape garden is complete without a few aloes.

The nursery is very easy to find on the R72 coastal road, at the corner of the Bushman’s River Mouth turnoff. Directions can also be found on the Witbos Kwekery Facebook page. Witbos Nursery is open on Tuesdays to Fridays from 8am to 4.30pm and on Saturday mornings from 9am to 1pm, and closed on Sundays and Mondays. For advice on plant suitability and plant care, Rhalda Heunis is at the nursery on Friday and Saturday mornings only. Home Essentials offers a variety of items to complement your home or kitchen. Sunnyside Garden Centre was founded in May 1977, and has been meeting the needs of Grahamstown gardeners for almost 41 years.

The centre has become a household name throughout the entire Albany area and plays an important part in everything associated with gardens and the greater green environment in as far afield as Adelaide, Fort Beaufort, Bedford, Port Alfred and Kenton-on-Sea.

Set in the leafy suburb of Sunnyside, the nursery is a quiet and peaceful retreat from the city’s busy CBD. Bird-life is abundant and customers can enjoy a tranquil stroll while viewing the large variety of plants and garden requisites on offer.

The living tree canopy provides natural shade in places and, together with open, sunny areas, simulates a realistic garden environment. Plants grow to be tough and, as a result, stand a greater chance of survival in the client’s gardens. The plants are sourced from all over South Africa and the centre stocks a large variety of both indigenous and non-invasive exotic species, all at competitive prices.

To add to the ambiance customers can visit the Garden Café, which serves light, tasty, value-for-money meals together with coffee, tea and various cold beverages.
