Robbers murder Bathurst woman, stab her partner

Police urge community to work with SAPS to bring perpetrators to book

- JON HOUZET

WELL-KNOWN Bathurst resident Stephne Evans was murdered by robbers at her home in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Evans’ partner Andre Malan was stabbed and needed hospital treatment.

Police spokeswoman Captain Mali Govender said Bathurst detectives were appealing to anyone who may be able to assist in tracking down the perpetrators.

A case of murder and house robbery has been opened for investigation.

According to Govender, Malan, who is in his 60s, went to investigate after hearing movement outside their home at about 4.45am on Sunday. “He was attacked by two unknown males. He fought back and attempted to close the kitchen door.

“One was in front and the other behind him and during the scuffle, he was stabbed on his upper body,” Govender said.

“When the second victim, [Evans], went to check on what was going on, she was struck on her upper body. She died at the scene.”

Govender said two cellphones were believed to have been taken by the fleeing robbers.

Malan was taken to hospital for medical treatment and was reported to be in severe shock and extremely traumatised. He has since been released from hospital.

A well-known personality in Bathurst, who once produced a community newspaper in the village, Evans more recently conducted a monthly quiz evening at The Ploughman pub at the Bathurst Agricultural Museum.

Condolences poured in on Talk of the Town’s Facebook page from local residents and people across the country when word spread about the tragedy.

Bathurst community policing forum head Mary Riley expressed the opinion of many, saying: “It’s very sad and I hope they catch the culprits. I am disappointed with the judicial system because people get caught and put in jail awaiting trial, then the case gets postponed and postponed, and then thrown out for lack of evidence or something. The culprits get off scot-free.”

Port Alfred Cluster Commander Brigadier Morgan Govender said: “My sincere condolences to the bereaved family and friends of the victim.

“This cruel deed by these ruthless attackers is strongly condemned.

“I urge the community to work with the SAPS in bringing these perpetrators to book. The investigation will be overseen by a senior, seasoned investigator.”
