EL surfing legend wins second event in series
HE latest King of the Kowie series event last Saturday saw surfing legend Wayne Monk win the open section in favourable conditions.
It was the second event in the annual three-series surfing contest held by the Kowie Boardriders Club (KBC).
“Conditions started off really good with three-foot waves,” KBC chairman Sunny Hill said.
“It was a lot cleaner in the morning, with some good waves. Then it dropped off about midday. For the finals it picked up again.”
Hill said there was a good turnout of KBC members, with only a couple of them missing.
“Wayne Monk and his girlfriend, Catherine Lee, were really good. He’s a past SA champ, multiple times. He makes us all up our game,” Hill said.
Monk is from East London but a member of the KBC.
As for the young groms, Hill said Carl Wiersma and Lara Heny did really well, paddling out to the backline all by themselves.
“They surfed well. Well done to them,” he said.
“I changed to a regular shortboard from the mini. It’s my dad’s old board,” said Lara.
Contest director Mickey Witthuhn said the last event of the series would be held in August or September.
“There’s a lot of out-of-town competitions between now and
Tthen. The last King of the Kowie will be in classic conditions,” he said. Grom Girls
