Talk of the Town

What is a home?

- ... with Simon Oliver

You have often heard me say, “I love my home.”

Naturally one would think that I was talking about the place where I live and that I share with special people.

And that is what I was talking about.

But I got to thinking, what is a home? Is it a building I own or perhaps a building in which I feel safe, for example, a church, a library or museum perhaps?

Is it a group of friends that meet regularly that share the same interests or sense of humour?

Is it a sports club where you compete and then reminisce about what worked and what didn’t? It might even be the place we work.

I would imagine it could be any one of these or all of them.

Home is most probably a feeling that we carry with us wherever we go.

It is not something that dies when we move but instead, we take with us the best of what we had and start rebuilding.

I have often wondered why we always find a buyer for a property even though to many it has no redeeming features. It may be that each buyer comes with his own memories and ideas of what a home should or could be.

We each know how we could change a property into our home. So it may be that we never leave our home, because we always carry it with us. We use what we have learnt and cherish to recreate that warm, happy, loving safe place for ourselves and those around us.

As an estate agent, one sometimes needs to remind oneself, that we are not dealing with bricks and mortar but much more involved with helping people realise their dreams of home.

Please contact me on simon.oliver@seeff.com or 082-653-5643 and tell me what you understand by the concept of home and maybe how you think I could improve the way in which I help you move your home.
