FISHAWAYS PORT ALFRED MIXED

February 22

Saturday morning brought close to gale force westerlies, making play difficult and this was reflected in the day’s low scores. Twenty players turned out to be drawn into 3- and 4-balls to play the usual 2-to-count Stableford alliance sponsored by Fishaways. Heather van Harmelen, Barrie Brady and visitor Mlibo won the morning’s proceeding­s with a comparativ­ely low 73 + 5 = 78 points. They were just one point to the fore of runners-up Margie Reid, RendoNel and Dave Kirk. (72 + 5 = 77). Both teams received Fishaway vouchers. Guy Cash, Fanie Smit, Santjie Nel and Marlene Gibson had the longest walk of the morning after carding just 73 points.

There were no individual scores of note, the best being Dave Kirk’snett 71. Two par three birdies were sunk, both on the 8th, one by WinkyDobso­n and the other by guest Mlibo.

The RPAGC’s bottle of wine for being closest to the pin on the 8th was awarded to Eric Segers.

Centenary competitio­n marking 100 years of the Ladies’ Section of the RPAGC

An open 2-to-count Stableford alliance in 4-balls was held on Valentine’s day, February 14 to mark 100 years of the ladies’ section. There were 97 players in the field.

KGB stalwarts Peter Reed, Cecil Grobler, Steve Kennedy and Dave Curran won the event with 90 points, counting out Nick Oosthuizen, Jimmy van Rensburg, Phillip van derByl and John Dell on the same score.

A ladies’ covey did come in 3rd. Trish Barwick, Margie Siegers, Sonia Reynolds and Kim Gardner registerin­g 89 points.

The longest walk was enjoyed by Ray and Henrietta de Power playing alongside Linda and Stuart Smith.

The competitio­n saw no 2-clubs. Mark Warren’s drive ended closest to the pin on the 6th as did Andy Stembridge’s on the 8th, Brian Wright’s on the 11th and Andy Hough’s on the 13th. Kim Gardner’s drive was closest to the 8th pin among the lady players. The longest drive winners were Tony Gunton (men) and Kim Gardner (women).

BUCO Ladies’ Open Day

The annual Ladies’ Open day was held on Sunday February 16 with players from other local clubs participat­ing. The format was a better-ball Stableford with both scores to count on the 2nd, 5th, 12th and 16th.

Jane Bladen teamed up with Ingrid Moss to card a winning 56 points. Fiona Richard and Janine Lee came in second with 54 points and Wendy Counihan and Binnie Stephen third on 52 points. The longest walk was made by Marlene Gibson and Megan Spargs who spent the afternoon admiring the scenery and game viewing

There were a number of 2-clubs: Mandy Douglas on the 6th and Kim van Niekerk, Sara White and IsebelViss­er all nailing par three birdies on the 8th.

Mandy Douglas’ drive ended closest to the pin on the 6th, as did Sara White’s on the 8th, Kim Gardner s on the 11th and Marty Wheeler’s

’ 13th.

The longest drive competitio­ns were held on the 18th and struck by Megan McCullum and Sue Kennedy in the lower and higher handicap categories respective­ly. There was also a “straightes­t drive” competitio­n held on the 1st fairway and this was won by Yvonne Hill.

KGB RESULTS

Tuesday February 17:Cool overcast weather brought down a big field of 46 players, but the weather was the final victor with good rain falling over the course and only five coveys finishing the 18 holes and all resembling drowned rats.

The competitio­n was declared null and void and the 2-club pool was carried over.

Friday February 21:Really good golfing conditions brought 36 golfers down to contest the 4bbb two scores to count. Outright winners on 86 points: the covey of Don McGarvie, Derick (Putter) van Harmelen, Peter Reed and Brian Reid.

Second on 85 points: John Dell, John Abbott, Tom Tag and Paul Fryer.

The Hamer en Sukkel was snatched by two coveys: Brian Robinson, Eugene Erasmus, Roger Kidson and Martin Lambrechts together with Andy Manson, Don Thompson, Guy Cash, and Graham Findlay.

Best Nett of 70 was carded by Tom Tagg.

The sizable 2-club pool was won by David Groenewald for his birdie on the 13th.
