BOWLS BANTER

-

Port Alfred Bowling Club

What a blast, what a party. I'm referring to a club function held two Saturdays ago with 49 bowlers and guests attending.

The highlight of the night was the show put on by Brian and the Bandits who, as introduced by head of entertainment Trevor Frost, have performed in London, New York and Paris (he was joking, of course).

Anyway, sincere thanks to John (Hodgiss), Stan (Weyer), John (Wyngaard) and Richard (Henshall) for acting the part of the “Bandits" . Later in the evening, four visiting grandchildren, aged between six and nine, refused to be left out of the limelight and also put on a show, with three dancing to a song sung by the fourth youngster.

Needless to say a lot of people danced to the music provided by Mel (Schultz), and simply let their hair down.

On a more sombre note, the club suffered an attempted break-in at the men's locker room as well as an iron shed containing greens equipment. Burglar bars prevented entry to the locker room but a window was broken.

On an even more sombre note, Peter Wansell was again the victim of crime, this time held up at knifepoint at his home.

To add insult to injury, the culprit was wearing a set of garden gloves stolen from Peter s car in a

’ previous theft incident only last week.

And when the thief demanded his bank card, Peter reminded him that he - the thief - had stolen it on a previous occasion. What bewildered Peter was that the rogue addressed him in isiXhosa - which Peter is fluent in.

Peter questioned how the thief had known this.

When fellow bowlers Mo, Wim and Joanne went to the crime scene, they found Peter sitting on a chair with a rifle across his lap.

Due to last Tuesday's weather and wind being atrocious, tabs-in was switched to last Thursday, where bowlers were met with wonderful, sunny weather. What a pleasure. Regarding the starting time for tabs-in, and now that spring has finally arrived, the report time has been changed from 1pm to 1.30pm.

Also, due to the pandemic, the club s AGM

’ set for September 17 has been called off and will now be held sometime in January next year.

This means the present committee remains, the change being Wendy Heny stepping down as secretary and being replaced by Noeline Kirsten.
