Talk of the Town

BOWLSBANTER

-

Tuesday afternoons weather was superb, and so another busy bowling week began.

We were pleased to welcome Eric and Celeste Kent back to the club after a long Covid break. They both joined the tabs in group and you would never say that they hadn’t played for about two years.

With some close games being reported, there could only be one winning team and that was Jonty Alexander and his team of Dave Thomas, Rob Walker and Celeste Kent.

On Wednesday morning, there was evidence that the novices enjoyed their time in the sun. For the record, some of these bowlers will be handing in their tabs for competitions sooner rather than later.

Because of the rains last week, the second round of the Nite Bowls competition was postponed to Wednesday evening the 6th of April.

Playing in rather miserable conditions, the evening had the following leaderboard results: 1st: Miracle Gardens

12 points, 43 shots difference 2nd: Crewless Boating 12 points, 7 shots difference 3rd: Happy Veg

11 points, 33 shots difference 4th: Round Table

8 points, 25 shots difference Again, a big thank you to Mike Tomlinson, Michael vdSandt and Lennie Clarke with their teams, for hosting a very successful second round of competition at our club. Thanks to the Lions club for making the evening a success by providing the yummy food and the background music. Also to Buildit for sponsoring the swindle board prize.

Due to the upcoming Easter weekend, the next Pick 'n Pay sponsored Nite bowls competition will be held on the 22nd of April, weather permitting.

Thursdays tabs in was won convincingly by Andrew Meyer and his very capable team of Jack Wiid and Yvonne Hill.

Thursday also saw two ladies’ teams and two men’s teams playing in Kenton. Although both our ladies’ teams won their games this week, the log-leaders in the Peg Purdon cup are Kenton on 6 points with a shot difference of +22.

In second position is Kowie on 4 points and a shot difference of +27. In third position is Port Alfred on 2 points and a shot difference of -49.

In the Horace Purdon Cup, the leaders are Port Alfred with 6 points and a shot difference of 10. In second spot is Kowie on 4 points and a shot difference of -9. Kenton have 2 points with a shot difference of -1.

The Personal Trust sponsored Trips which was planned for Friday afternoon, was canceled due to the heavy rains in the morning, however the cold weather did not deter our monthly steak night.

2022 is the Kowie Club Centenary Year and we have made significant improvements to our clubhouse and surrounds.

We extended an invitation to all our sponsors, and their partners, to join us for the evening.

Special mention to Louis Oosthuizen from Sky Security; Gary McKai from Mac Hire, Chris Roberts from Forest Hills Construction, Gary Elliot from Indepco, Viv Dell from Gavin Dell Construction, Richard Legg from IHire, Gerhard van der Walt from Buco; Andre Swanepoel from Build It, Kevyn Stone from Kayjay’s bricks, Greg Williams from Williams Building Solutions, Isobel Meyer from Pam Golding

Properties and Paul Knight from Feathers Farm.

Without the generous support from our sponsors, the improvements would not have been possible, so a big thanks to one and all!!

Saturday’s Pam Goldingsponsored competition was played in overcast weather conditions. After an afternoon of exciting bowling, the overall winning team for the competition was Mike Thomlison and Laurie May.

Second was Peter May and John Hubbard. In third place was Judy Alexander's team of Elsabe Rodriguez and Andre Laas.

The highlight of the evening, was the talk on Mental Skills, by Greg Wilmot, a sports psychologist. There were very interesting points raised by Greg and we could all take something home to ponder and apply before bowling the next wood. This was followed by a feast of snacks provided by the members.

Again, a big thank you to Andrew Meyer from Pam Golding for his sponsorship of the hampers.

The top 4 sides of the Kowie Premier League are Jason Prince's team, Jacques Krige's team, Brian Rogers's team and Lennie Clark's team. The playoff dates will be decided during at a later date.

Lastly, congratulations to Stan Long and his team of PieterStegmann, Cyprian Guard and Peter May for ending up 4th in their section at the All Cape bowling tournament held in Cape Town this past week.
