RPAGC Ladies April 19

Playing in perfect golfing weather, 24 ladies took part in a 3 Ball Alliance sponsored by Pick ’n Pay – one score to count on hole 1, two to count on hole 2 and three to count on hole 3 and then repeating on each of the following holes.

1st place was taken by Yvonne Hill, Ronel Hough and Heather van Harmelen on 77 points and 2nd place was taken by Sandy Fryer, Prue Peacock and Jenny Adair on 71 points. Nearest the pins were won by Angela Trollip on the 6th (sponsored by the ladies section), Pat Halse on the 8th (sponsored by Top Carpets), Sue Kennedy on the 11th (sponsored by Kekkel en Kraai) and by Shirley Heny, nearest for 2 on the 13th (sponsored by The Firm).

The Longest Drive competition on Hole 18 was won by Angela Trollip in the 0-21 handicaps division and the winner in the 22-onwards division was Sylvia Foster.

Heather van Harmelen had the only two club of the day on the 8th. The competition on May 3rd will be a Viv Jordan Individual Stableford.

Tuesday April 19

Following a weekend of rain 36 keen golfers reported for the draw to find that nine 4-balls had to contest a Stableford Alliance one-score-tocount on the par fives, two-scores-tocount on the par fours and threescores-to-count on the par threes. Very little wind to distract but heavy playing conditions due to the rain saw Steve Kennedy, Len Bohnen, Brian Shirley and Andy Stembridge coming home with 83 points to finish in first place. On their heels Arnie Schultz, Tom Tagg, Tony Halse and Russell Warren finished in second position on 82 points.

Derek van Harmelen, Richard Farndell, Rick Hill and John Dell, on a cruise of their own, were adrift of the leaders as they found that 69 points earned the dubious honour of the Hamer & Sukkel residing on their table

dominated by the sad passing of Margaret Smith, something of a legend of the Alexandria Golf Club. Margaret lost her battle with cancer in Port Alfred last Tuesday. Her association with the Club goes back a long way and she gave extraordinary service to the Club, holding the position of Club Captain from 2002 to 2009 and Club President from 2012 to 2014, and again from 2016 to 2019.

Her funeral service was held at Christ Church in Alexandria, after which family and friends aptly gathered at the Alexandria Golf Club to reminisce about her life and the significance of her contribution to the Club.

Last Wednesday a bonus bogey format was played, with a small field, in summery conditions. Willie Rademeyer and Pete Andrew ended up sharing the spoils, with Dave Nicoll in third place.

The four-ball of James Nicoll, Rendo Nell, Dave and Pete won the Alliance. Leon Naude and Pete Andrew shared the Jackpot. Pete also achieved a 2-club on the 8th hole.

Just five golfers braved the wet conditions on Saturday afternoon and had a good afternoon with the weather clearing up as the round progressed. Allan Brotherton had a very good round scoring 39 stableford points, well ahead of Pete Andrew on 34 and Dave Nicoll on 30 points.

This Saturday the Club will host the Sunshine Coast Hospice Golf Day. It will be an Individual Stableford competition with an entry fee of R200.

The following week, 7 May, will see the Alexandria Christian Academy Golf Day taking place, also an Individual Stableford and entry fee of R200.

Players are encouraged to support these two worthy causes and to book their tee-off times by phoning the Club on 046 653 0207.

Members, please note that the Club AGM will take place at 6pm on Friday May 13. This will be followed by a Bring and Braai.
