KOWIE BOWLING CLUB

In essence, this week has been a relatively “quiet” week if one has to compare it to last week’s club activities. This is mostly due to the club having its Novice, Open and Seniors singles competitions being played out during the week.

Because of the steep wooded Kranz which lies directly behind our club, the balmy afternoons soon turn chilly long before it gets dark. Needless to say, by the 18th end, it’s bitterly cold, so jerseys and tracksuit tops are a must.

Tuesday afternoon was no different. The SPAR voucher sponsored tabs in competition was just as chilly. After the tea break, out came the “woolies.”

The deserved winners of the vouchers were Stan Long and his talented team of Gary Everton and the ever chirpy, Ozzie Harbrecht.

Wednesday morning’s novice session was shared with a number of club members playing in the above mentioned singles competitions. While it was fun in the sun for the group of Novices, it was serious stuff in the adjoining rinks.

Playing in windy overcast weather, Thursday was mainly a continuation of the singles competitions with some rather unexpected upsets being the order of the day. At this stage of the competition it’s difficult to predict winners in each category, because as ALL seasoned bowlers know ........ “on the day, ANYONE can win their game”.

On Friday evening, we saw the penultimate round of the Nite Bowls competition being played out. The following were the results after 7 rounds:

The winning team for the evening in the “A” section was Miracle Gardens, and in the “B” Section, Plumrite Plumbing won. Overall log-leaders are:

1st - Kennys Quarts on 31 points with a shot difference of 19.

2nd - Miracle Gardens on 29 points with a shot differenceof +85

3rd - Happy Veg on 28 points with a shot difference of +45

4th - Pick n Pay on 27 points with a shot difference of + 25.

The “Build it” swindle board draw was won by Brendon Marais from Lions.

Thanks again to Mike Tomlinson and his team for organising the tournament, the Lions club for the delicious food, and to the team behind the bar for the supply of the bitterly cold beverages.

Saturday afternoon saw our rugby Bokke clinching the series against the Welsh, and also saw the final rounds of the Men’s and Ladies Eastern Areas 4’s being played in Makhanda, where the finals were decided on Sunday.

It is with great pride to report that our Kowiemens team made a clean sweep of the 4’s competition. Jacques Krige, Bryan Burger, Allan Sheriden and David

Thomas won Gold and Steve Minnaar, Stan Long, Jonty Alexander and Jason Prince won Silver.

It did not end there. The ladies team of Jackie De Koker, Megan Kriel, Helise Hattingh and Gill Turner beat Kenton to win the ladies 4’s Eastern Areas Gold title.

What a great achievement for our club. Congratulations to all our winners.

PORT ALFRED BOWLING

With many new members joining the club and most beginner bowlers, things are looking up membership wise.

Regarding club competitions, Brian McLean beat Lenny Clarke 21-15 in the first round of the club’s open singles and played legend Trevor Frost in Saturday’s semifinal while Chris Avis played Stuart McDougall. The winners were Brian and Chris who will now meet in the final.

The first leg of the club’s women’s and men’s drawn trips was set for Tuesday this week and the results will be reported soon.

Also coming up will be the Doris Ford and Les Clarke which is to be played at Kenton on Thursday, July 28. Nice bowling all.

In the meantime, hold thumbs for Hein Strombeck (skip), Stuart and Brian who travel to Jeffreys Bay tomorrow (Friday) to compete in the EP men’s trips. Also arriving will be an Albany side skipped by Kallie Carelse who were the runners-up. The two teams will be staying in the same guest house, so behave.

This past Saturday was the Guido’s-sponsored trips with the team skipped by Martin Leonard walking away with the sponsored vouchers. Many thanks to Guidos.

Each Thursday’s bowls coaching clinic conducted by Ron Orford with help from Trevor, continues to be well attended, so keep it up everyone.
