KOWIE BOWLING CLUB

With the weather playing along superbly, another great week of bowling was enjoyed by our members, and visitors.

Tuesday saw a good turnout for the playing of the Men’s and Ladies’ Singles Championship play-offs. There have been some scintillating games played during the course of the week in the three different categories of competition.

Tuesday’s tabs-in competition was won by Linda May and Bugs Wilmot who beat Gill Turner and Peter Ford in their game of pairs.

The group of Novices enjoyed another great morning of bowling on Wednesday morning, with the continuation of the Singles Championship games being played out during the rest of the day.

On Thursday afternoon, the ever popular Pam Golding sponsored trips*

competition was well supported this week, with 6 rinks being used to the full. The team that walked away with the winning hamper was skipped by Denny Richardson, with Mike Ryan and the very talented Ronel Hough making up his team.

Lester Scriven, Linda May and Martin Slattery took the second place hamper, and in third spot was Jackie Kriel, Michael van der Sandt and Uncle Don Kelly.

Once again, a big thank you to Andrea Meyer for handing out the prizes, and Pam Golding Properties for their generous hamper sponsorships.

Friday saw the continuation of the Singles Championship games being played out.

Saturday morning got off to an early start where our club hosted the Kowie Centenary Mixed Rivalry 4s competition. With lots of great prizes on the line, 24 teams from far and wide entered the competition with great expectations.

With five games of 15 ends to play over the weekend, and 10 points for grabs for every game, the leader board changed hands continuously after the first three games were decided on Saturday afternoon.

After a long day of bowling, the

evening ended on a jovial note where all the players were invited to a steak braai and some good old rock and roll songs from our local muso, Peter Drennan. Until the last round was called, it was pleasing to see a number of our senior visitors getting down to some serious twisting and jiving.

The competition continued at 9am on Sunday, with the last two games being played before a late lunch was served.

After five gruelling games of competition, the winners of the Kowie Centenary Mixed Rivalry 4s competition was deservedly won by Kowies very own "Silver Fox", Stan Long. He was ably assisted by his team of Cyprian Guard, Gill Turner and Christa von Gericke.

Second place winners went to the Kenton team of Pam Bowker, Neville Emslie, Lin Andrew and Cecilia Immelman.

3rd place went to the Kowie team of Jack Wiid, Yvonne Hill, MJ de Speville and Andre Laas.

4th place went to Jason Prince, James ‘Foxy’ Fox, Jacques Krige and Ronel Hough.

5th place winners were Jonty and Judy Alexander, Martin and Debbie Slattery.

The Plate was won by Brian Aldag’s team of Allan Sheridan, Sheila Walker and Louise Flemming.

Congratulations to all the deserving winners. Hopefully, we'll see you all next year, same time, same place.

That’s not all. The MASSIVE hamper of yummy goodies (and more) which was raffled, was won by the ever smiling Jill Reed. The smaller hamper was won by a very happy Meagan Alexander.

Without our two major sponsors, this tournament would not have been made possible, so a massive thanks goes to BUCO and Eco Tanks.

Thanks to Jill Reed and her team in the kitchen for all the hard work that was put in for the two days of competition. Thanks to Andrew Meyer and his team behind the bar who kept the players and visitors hydrated throughout the weekend.

To Michael van der Sandt for the immaculate greens, and his tireless team for doing the marking and boards placement etc.

Yet another very successful tournament organised and hosted by the

Kowie Bowling Club.

PORT ALFRED BOWLING

Bowls, bowls and more bowls. That’s the name of the game in this part of the world.

For instance, following the Kowie Rivalry held this past weekend in which several Port Alfred members took part, the next round of the club’s drawn trips for men took place this past Tuesday, followed by the women’s drawn trips on Wednesday. In the first round of the men’s event, Brian McLean, Jim Haswell and Fred Stowe beat Trevor Frost, Mike Connelan and Michael Long by two shots.

Earlier last Thursday, the Doris Ford and Les Clarke competition between Port Alfred and Kenton took place in Kenton. Then this weekend, teams will be playing in the annual Inggs Cup to be staged at different venues, among them Uitenhage.

But back to the Kowie Rivalry competition where Trevor played in a mixed team, while Brian managed to persuade his wife Mary, Joanne Brown and Joan Jacobs to join in. However, neither side was among the prize winners, despite both having some excellent wins.

The cold weather saw the Raduesponsored day being postponed and when played, it was the team of Ben Niewoudt (skip), Boela Burger, Joan van Rensburg and Neil McCullum who walked away with the main prize. Well done to the winners and many thanks to the sponsor.

The Bingo evening set for last Friday evening at the club proved a huge success and many thanks to the organisers. Good bowling to all.
