The run-up to Women’s Day was overshadowed by Sunday night’s floods, and so while there were some responses to “Which South African woman is your hero and why?”, more folk shared their experience of Sunday night’s extreme weather.

Mike Stephen said, without hesitation, his wife.

Jane Wright said: “Surely a woman is a heroine not a hero”.

Simo Mawawa Ndyoko mentioned his wife, Nosiphiwo Ndyoko.

After the heavy rains on Sunday night, the SA Weather Service said Port Alfred had received 71.6mm. The Port Alfred community said otherwise.

Gerald and Wanda Loxton said: “Rain gauge overflowed ... more than 100 mms.”

Ken Hill said: “More than 100 gauge overflowed.”

Patrick Francis measured over 100mm.

Sue Cherry said 105mm, including Saturday.

Helen Averbuch said: “15 + 100 + 5 = 120mm the 100 overflowed so it’s more than that in 24 hours. West Bank, Burke Street.”

Bennie van Niekerk said 158mm West Bank.

Michael Lightfoot said the gauge overflowed.

Graham Strachan said his 100mm gauge might have overflowed.

The other side of dealing with climate change and variability is adaptation. My mother’s house in Port Alfred is not insured. It suffered minor structural damage from the last night thunderstorm. About 100mm of rainfall was recorded. Who covers the elderly people’s insurance?

White people in the Eastern Cape speak Xhosa fluently. There’s this one in Port Alfred who even calls his clan as Tshezi.

Look here in Gqeberha if you are a Xhosa speaking person next to an [Afrikaans person] and you want to gossip expect a Xhosa reply from them. Here is another lady falling in this lift and this was coming from an Afrikaaner person in IsiXhosa asking “What is your problem sister? Why are you talking about me while you do not know me?”
