KENTON BOWLING CLUB

We had a well-attended Tabs turnout on Wednesday which was followed by Spar day on Thursday. The winners of the Spar vouchers were Rodney Austin, Ian Ballentyn and Mark van Rensburg.

Cecelia arranged a lot of bounce games for Friday afternoon and some of our new members and visitors were in attendance too. We had a nice get together after the bowls and all the draws were done. The whisky draw was won by Arrie van Esch, who kindly gave it back to the club. The Lockdown Meat Draw was won by Kevin Sharp and Lee Slater had her name pulled out for the Joker Draw. Unfortunately she had to be satisfied with the R100 consolation prize so the Joker is still up on the board waiting to be selected.

Social Saturday was sponsored by our friends at Robbys Liquor Store and the winners for this round were Sheila Walker, Gert Immelman and Ferdi Bergh.

The next leg of the Dias Jackpot takes place on Wednesday so we hope to see a big turnout of bowlers trying to improve their positions on the log.

A memorial service for Ollie Davis is taking place at the St Davids Anglican Church on Friday at 10am and this will be followed by a get together at the bowls club in honour of him.

Unfortunately we have had to postpone our Kenton Classic that was due to take place next weekend due to matters beyond our control. You should all have received the official notice of this by email so I won’t comment further on it.

A reminder that our AGM is taking place on Wednesday August 31 so if you have any nominations for the various positions the list is on the notice board where the names can be put forward for the committee.

KOWIE BOWLING CLUB

We have really been spoilt with the weather conditions lately, and this week was no different.

Tuesday’s tabs in was well attended, keeping in mind that the 3 categories of Singles Championship games are being played on Tuesdays on separate greens.

The tabs in team of Jonty Alexander put up a gallant fight, but the team of Bryan Burger, Bugs Wilmot, Martin Slattery and Patrick Smith won the afternoons competition.

Playing in cool overcast weather, there was a good turnout at the Novice session on Wednesday.

A hearty welcome to Theo and Diane Kemp, who are originally from Cathcart, but now residing here in their own piece of paradise. After having played quite a lot of social bowls in Cathcart, they've decided to slow down on their golf a bit to test the Kowie Bowling Clubs waters. They both slotted in perfectly and I’m quite positive we’ll be seeing both of them joining the club and playing tabs in with us shortly.

Thursday again saw the continuation of the knockout rounds of the Seniors, Open and Novice Singles Championship games being played.

The rest of the club played tabs in, with the team of Bugs Wilmot, Claire Bell and the evergreen and lovable Ouma Lucia Nel outsmarting Andrew Meyer, Uncle Don Kelly and Gerald Mills, to take home the bragging rights for the day.

In beautiful warm sunny weather, Friday saw more knockout singles games being played, with a handful of chaps enjoying a bounce game in the adjoining rinks.

The normal South African sporting fraternity, in mid-Winter, would deem Saturday a Test rugby day, but this did not stop a bunch of members using the early afternoon to play a game of tabs in BEFORE the rugby.

The Test day tabs in winning team was Dave Freeme and his team of Mike Ryan and Martin Slattery.

Eight of our top bowlers travelled through to Kariega this past weekend to play in the Inngs Cup 2022 bowling 4’s tournament. Steve Minaar’s team of Peter May, Lester Scriven and Jason Prince managed to win one game and lost 3. Jacques Krige’s team of Bryan Burger, Denny Richardson and Andrew Meyer did a little better by winning one game, peeling one and losing 2 games.

Basic bowling etiquette is important in any game, whether it be tabs in or most importantly, in a competition against opposition from another club. Every week there will be snippets of info regarding bowls etiquette as a lot of us (especially the scribe) break the basic rules without even realising it, mostly because of the emotions and competitiveness that result during a tight/close game which unfortunately outshine basic etiquette rules. Without preaching to the converted, here are a couple of points to ponder when next on the greens.

● Do not openly comment or complain when one of your team, or the opposition plays a bad shot.

● After a poor delivery by a teammate, negative body language (which plays a big part in bowling) can be seen by your team members and is demoralising.

Remember that you get out of the game, what you are prepared to put into it.

PORT ALFRED BOWLING CLUB

The club’s annual general meeting is set for Tuesday, August 24 with club president Trevor Frost and his wife Jenny, the treasurer, both standing down. The club wishes to thank both for their dedication over the past two years.

Former club captain John Hodges has made himself available to take over as president so also a big thanks to him.

The ladies’ open singles is now being played on a round robin basis with the first round having been played last Wednesday. Gail* lost both, Ed won both, Lynda won both, Carol lost both, Julie and Joanne (Brown) both won and lost one while Jenny won both and Mel, who took a break from croquet, lost both her games. Good bowling to all in the next round.

The Personal Trust-sponsored afternoon was played with Phil Taylor’s team of Joanne van Rensburg and EulaliMoorcroft pocketing the top money prize with Elzabe Rodriguez, Anna Strombeck and Yvonne Surtees ending a good second.

It is with sadness that the club has heard that the Kenton men’s classic has had to be postponed due to lack of entries. A new date has been set.

The club’s open singles final between Brian McLean and Chris Avis which was set for this past weekend had to be postponed due to Brian being away to attend a family function and a new date will have to be found.

Both Trevor and Hein Strombeck took teams to Uitenhage to compete in the Inggs Cup this past weekend. All the players suffered due to the icy cold conditions which did not help their performances. Bad luck guys.

Coming up on the August 20 will be a dance at the club.
