Talk of the Town

BOWLSBANTER

-

This week’s bowling activities were hampered by wet weather on Tuesday, so it was a rest day for all.

Wednesday’s weather was user-friendly, so the morning session with the Novices (and others) got in full swing just after 10am. The turnout was good and as usual, lots of fun was had.

Thursday afternoon was another glorious day for bowling, where the team of Bryan Burger, Peter May, Rob Walker and Marian Walwyn won the tabs-in competition and the generously sponsored Ocean Basket meal vouchers.

Friday afternoon saw the monthly Personal Trust Trips competition being held in super bowling weather. Disappointingly, there were only 12 teams that participated in the competition this month, but as Dave Thomas, the event organiser said, it’s about the quality of players, and not the quantity.

After two rounds of some very closely contested games, the overall winners were Andrew Meyer and his team of Mike Ryan and Rowlen von Gericke.

The second-placed winners were Cyprian Guard and his team of Helise Hattingh and up-andcoming novice, Nicole van der Merwe. Allan Sheridan’s team of Avice and Oosten Steenkamp came third.

After the conclusion of the prize-giving, a huge fire was lit and a crowd of rowdy sunburnt bowlers enjoyed a bring-andbraai, with Mike Ryan strumming merrily on his guitar to some very out-of-tune bowlers having the time of their lives. Big thanks to Colleen Davy for organising the garlic bread rolls, boiled potatoes and yummy mushroom and pepper sauce. Rugby World Cup fever took precedence over Saturday afternoon’s bowling activities, and only a handful of bowlers put their tabs in to enjoy the immaculate facilities available for all club members. Saturday morning saw two Kowie men’s teams travelling through to Makhanda to play in the prestigious White Side Cup competition at the Grahamstown Bowling Club.

The competition ended on Sunday afternoon with the Kowie A side of Jacques Krige, Mike Tomlinson, Cyprian Guard and Mike Ryan doing well in their sectional playoffs, winning three of their four games.

The Kowie B side of Stan Long, Andrew Meyer, Lenny Clark, and Justin Louw had mixed fortunes, and ended up winning one of their four games.

For the die-hard enthusiasts, the full report and the final results of the White Side Cup, together with the combined Inggs Cup, will be posted on the Eastern Areas Bowling link on Facebook.

KENTON

The SPAR sponsored competition day attracted a full green of mainly fours being played. Dave and team ran out winners with a 9 +26.

Port Alfred hosted Kenton for the next round of the Les Clarke and the last round of the Doris Ford competitions.

The four men’s teams triumphed and with one round to play are in a very strong position.

Our congratulations go to Patricia’s team for winning and Pam’s team for peeling, which crowned Kenton ladies as the overall winners of the Doris Ford for the year.

Our further congratulations go to Hermanus Scholtz for winning silver in the vision impaired World Bowls competition in Australia.

He is a regular visitor too our club and donated one of his Commonwealth shirts to the club a year or so ago.

Port Alfred Bowling Club were unable to provide their column to Talk of the Town due to a technical problem.*
