BOWLSBANTER

-

The semifinals of the men’s section and final of the ladies’ section of the club’s open singles were completed last Wednesday.

In the men’s semifinal, Hein Strombeck had a win over Phil Taylor while Brian McLean beat Ron Orford in a close game.

Then Jenny Frost defeated Joanne Brown to walk away as the women’s champion while Stombeck emerged the men’s singles champion.

A thrilled Strombeck was overheard saying it had taken him 20 years to have his name up on the winner’s board together with his late father.

Next month a group of doctors living in Johannesburg, Gqeberha and East London will visit the club where some members will play croquet while others will be involved with bowls and then swap around.

The staging of the Buco Trips to be held at this club is around the corner and the Kowie Classic is set for October 7 and 8 followed by the final round of the Les Clarke and Doris Ford against Kenton BC on Thursday October 12.

The Sunshine Life Centre will be holding a bowls fun day on Monday September 25 starting at 12.30pm. Two bowls will be used, four players per team and 24 ends played. Sounds like a lot of fun.

On the entertainment front, a craft beer and wine tasting evening will be held on September 30 at the club.

Lastly, let’s wish Grumpy

Enslin, Hein and Brian and their respective Eastern Areas teams good bowling when they travel to East London tomorrow (Friday) for the annual mini-districts.

Bowling club saw the Diaz Insurance trips won by John Ledger and team.

Kowie Bowling Club hosted four men’s teams and four ladies’ teams to contest Kenton Kowie Fours and the next round of the Bess Tweedie on a challenging surface that tested the skills of the bowlers. Kowie capitalised on their superior skills and experience to run out winners.

The monthly Personal Trust Trips attracted 16 teams and Carl Vermeulen of Personal Trust celebrated with a win, coinciding with his involvement with bowls exactly seven years to the day.

The annual Kenton Novices Competition was held over the weekend in gale force winds. All credit goes to Mark Janse van Rensburg and Jean Austin for producing a high quality standard of bowling that saw them crowned the winners of the Men’s and Ladies Novices for 2023.
