Siegers KGB September 19

Following a weekend where many were not sure of where their homes may have drifted to, with spring tides and gale force winds taking a toll on our coastline, everything settled and was almost sublime with a suggestion of a northwesterly wind that switched to a light easterly for the 31 players fortunate to be drawn in one three-ball and seven four-balls to contest an alliance stableford two-scores-to-count, with a bonus point available for a “sandy”, a par from a bunker.

Scoring was good as the greens are settling well following spring treatment combined with the favourable weather and Heinz Czepluch, Peter Sinclair, Andy Barnes and Donald McGarvie tied with John Ralph, Neil Loundar, Michael Collins and Don Thomson on 92 points to finish joint first.

The only covey not to reach the 80s with 79 (74+5) points was Andrew White, Andy Manson and Mike Stadler and that meant they stood out at prize-giving with ownership of the Hamer & Sukkel. Michael Collins birdied the parthree sixth hole only to see Russell Warren with his birdie on the parthree 13th hole capture the carry over two-club pool for his covey. Individual scoring was good and saw Donald McGarvie, Lawrence Schultz and John Dell all record 70 netts; Arnie Schultz, Nick Oosthuizen and Andy Stembridge record 69 netts; and player of the day Andy Barnes come home with a 65 nett.

September 22

A gap in the high winds of late saw an idyllic morning with warmth and a light westerly wind dominate proceedings for the 41 players that were drawn in three three-balls and eight four-balls to contest an alliance stableford twoscores-to-count format with the now standard bonus point for a “sandy”, a par from a bunker. Scoring reflected conditions as Jimmy van Rensburg, Mike Beaumont, Brian Shirley and Eugene Erasmus posted a winning 94 points in a photo finish. Tied a nose behind were Matt Chadwick, Henry Ellis, Paul Fryer and Brian Reid dead level with Mark Warren, Peter Reed, Hein Barnard and Pat Halse, both coveys finishing on 93 points in second. Believing that they were safe, it took a while before the Hamer & Sukkel finally migrated to the table of Andrew White, Daan Slabbert, Maureen McGarvie and Bryan Robinson, for what would normally have been a score in no danger of the award, 84 points.

Craig Harebottle and Jenny Ralph both birdied the par three eighth hole and being in separate coveys the two-club pool carried over. Individual scoring shone as Matt Chadwick, Don Thomson and Ross Grainger posted 70 netts; Michael Collins, Hein Barnard, Brian Shirley and Dave Curran posted 69 netts; Donald McGarvie, Brian Reid and Pat Halse posted 68 netts: clearing the way for player of the day Eugene Erasmus to post a 67 nett. Ross Grainger’s pedigree was further confirmed by his recording a 78 gross.
