Talk of the Town

BOWLSBANTER

-

After the hectic competitive bowls of the previous week, this week has been blissfully restful in comparison.

There was a bit of practice on Tuesday and then the Continental Trips competition on Wednesday. With good weather and a full field, it was the 10 +14 from David Freeme and team who ran away from the teams skipped by Johan Grobler, Kevin Bates and Ivan Pachonick.

The Freeme team were rewarded with a generous voucher for a meal at the Continental Restaurant.

Thursday tabs-in and Friday bounce games along with the always enthusiastic ‘newbies’ games ended with scrumptious savoury pancakes, rounding off what turned out to be a short week. Why? The rains came and as I write it is still teeming down.

Hopefully the bad weather has missed East London where our two representatives on the Eastern Areas team, Dave West (manager) and Willie Basson are playing in the Mini-Districts competition.

Tuesday afternoon had a reasonably good turnout for the tabs-in competition, which had meal vouchers sponsored by “Graze by the River” up for grabs.

Well done to Mike Tomlinson and his team of Rowlen von Gericke and Keith Benson who were declared the winners.

At the prize-giving, Justin Louw was officially awarded his Eastern Areas cap by the club president, Judy Alexander.

The turnout for the Wednesday morning novice session was enjoyed by all who participated, with the following etiquette hints*

being focused on:

Keep still when a player is delivering a bowl, no matter which side of the rink you are standing.

Do not move a bowl from the head without permission UNTIL agreement has been reached.

Stand at least 2m behind the

head during play.

At the mat end, always position yourself behind the mat and out of the line of peripheral vision of the player on the mat.

Thursday’s turnout for tabs-in was a little disappointing, as the weather was great and the greens were running as straight as a dice.

The winning team of the “Niche” meal vouchers and Rosehill SPAR gift voucher was none other than the war-horse, Colleen Davy, and her team of Ossie Harbrecht (man of the match) and the newby, Mark Asperling.

Unfortunately, due to the adverse weather conditions, there was no further bowling at the club for the rest of the week. However, a team of three Kowie members and one from Port Alfred, travelled up the coast for the invitational annual “Seafood Classic”, hosted by the Kei Mouth and Morgans Bay bowling clubs, where 20 top class teams were entered.

It is pleasing to report that Stan Long’s team of Rob Muzzell, Mike Ryan (all Kowie) and Joanne Brown (Port Alfred), won both their opening games on Saturday.

Unfortunately, due to excessive overnight rains, the competition was called off on Sunday morning with the Dordrecht team skipped by Linky Mortlock (nee Boshoff) and Stan Long both leading the competition on 14 points after two rounds of competition. Due to a higher shot profit, Linky’s team won the gold, and Stan’s, the silver.

The men’s Eastern Area MiniDistricts team, which included Jonty Alexander, Peter May, Lenny Clark, Justin Louw and Steve Minnaar from Kowie, travelled through to East London over the weekend to play in the mini districts competition. The teams were able to play on Friday afternoon and Saturday, but no matches could be played on Sunday due to excessive rains. Final results will be published in next week’s update

Rrepresenting EPU30s was Jacques Moolman, who travelled through to Klerksdorp over the weekend to play in the U30’s interdistrict competition. Their first game had a dramatic turnaround in the very last end. After being seven shots down, the Eastern Areas side miraculously picked up an eight, and won the game. Well done to Jacques and his team.

The final results will also be communicated next week.
