Talk of the Town

BOWLSBANTER

-

The bowling calendar took a huge dive in attendance this week. This was due to the predicted widespread rain over the district during the week and, as a result, many of our members chose the comfort of their homes to spend their afternoons with their families above the bowling greens.

Tuesday afternoon was no different, resulting in only a handful of bowlers handing in their tabs. Playing in heavy overcast weather, and intermittent drizzle, the winners of The Boys at Penny Farthing meal vouchers were John Hubbard and his pairs partner, Avice Steenkamp.

The sun stuck its head out temporarily, so Wednesday morning got the nod from our greenkeeper for a small group of novices and “oldies” to use the B green for our weekly morning session.

Thursday ’ s weather again hampered the attendance register.

The rain came down early morning, with further showers expected in the afternoon. This however didn’t deter some diehard members from coming out and rolling a couple of bowls.

For the record, the winners of the "friendly" tabs in match were Justin Louw and Ozzy Harbrecht.

Saturday was another touchand-go day, as far as the weather was concerned, as the predictions were for more rain during the day.

Fortunately the sun stuck its head out from around midmorning, which allowed the greens team to prepare a rink for play in the afternoon.

Judy Alexander and her team of Linda May and Ozzy Halbrecht won their game convincingly and walked away with the generously sponsored Niche meal vouchers.

Three men’s teams travelled to Tarkastad to play in their annual classic. The competition was extremely tough and all our teams thoroughly enjoyed the platteland hospitality.

In closing, we are very proud to announce that the following club members have been selected for top bowling honours over the weekend.

Megan Kriel has been included in the EP ladies’ B side, Jackie Kriel in the EP seniors side, and our very own novice, Justin Louw, in the men’s B-side.

Congratulations to you all.

Well-deserved reward for the hard work.

PORT ALFRED

Rain, rain and more rain but thankfully the final leg of the Les Clarke and Doris Ford competition was played against Kenton in Kenton last Thursday.

Earlier in the morning, competition secretary Hein Strombeck had received news from Kenton that it was drizzling and a decision would be made at midday whether play would go ahead or not.

It was then a case of thumbs up with four men ’ s teams and three ladies’ teams setting off and they were greeted with good weather but understandably a rather heavy A green.

With all the tramping down by the players, the green speed did improve as the games progressed but in the end, the two ladies’ sides, skipped by Elzabe Rodriguez and Claire Bell, both lost, while the men won two and lost two. The men’s winning skips were Trevor Frost and Hein. Well done to all the Kenton players.

This weekend, Hein, Stuart McDougall, Brian McLean and Neil de Villiers will compete in the King William’s Town Bowling Club Classic. Neil, a former Port Alfred Club bowler who moved to East London last year, will link up with his former teammates for Saturday’s opening game.

If rain allows, coming up is the Kenton GBS, set for Saturday October 28, with their mixed classic set for November 14 and 15. On the home front, there will be the staging of the annual “triangular’’ between Port Alfred and Westview Bowling Clubs on November 25, 26. Live music has been arranged for Saturday evening.

KENTON

Despite the pessimistic weather forecast, all the scheduled competitions were completed* successfully.

Wednesday was the Diaz Insurance Jackpot Tabs-in. A full turnout necessitated playing fours over 21 ends, instead of the usual 18. The team ably skipped by Pippa Swift marched to victory.

On Thursday, Kenton hosted Port Alfred for the final rounds of the Doris Ford and the Les Clarke.

A year’s worth of efforts culminating in this, the last round. The two ladies’ teams triumphed over the opposition.

Not all the men’s teams won their matches, but more than enough was done to ensure the trophy is safe in our cabinet for another year.

On the day, Kenton 28 + 29 beat Port Alfred 12 -29 and for the year Kenton scored 108 +101 against Port Alfred’s 52 -101. Well done girls and guys! The greens played superbly for the final competition of the week

the Kenton Garden Service Fun Day.

The team skipped by Wickus van Schalkwyk, after a modest start, carded a 9 +8 to become the worthy winners.

Well done to Wikus and team and thanks to Kenton Garden Services for sponsoring the competition.

There ended a full week of exciting competitions.
