Talk of the Town

Dear animal-loving residents of Ndlambe district

-

Although we do have a support base within the Ndlambe district, we have noted recently that this is declining for financial reasons, old members leaving or passing away, increasing competition from people-orientated welfare organisations, and a general lack of understanding of what the SPCA contributes to the community.

We are hoping to remind our residents about the need for a strong animal welfare base, by producing a monthly article explaining what we do, and highlighting specific achievements, and upcoming fundraising events.

The SPCA belongs to the community, it is your SPCA: without your willingness to invest physically, emotionally, financially, and in kind, it will cease to exist.

Your SPCA doesn’t get funding from any “mother body”, nor from national, or local government.

Imagine the SPCA’s Ndlambe district from Nanaga to Hamburg and up to the Bloukrans Pass, with its many thousands of animals, without us.

There would be animals being abused with no one to help them, animal populations exploding, homeless animals roaming the streets, and the rapid spread of diseases such as rabies, distemper, parvo and biliary: a truly horrific picture.

Your SPCA provides affordable sterilisations, vaccinations, and basic clinic treatments, all of which are available to any person or family earning less than R10,000 per month net (after tax). In other words, those people and families who are struggling financially.

That probably equates to about 80% of our community.

This is only possible because we have a community service vet.

However we still need the financial means to purchase medicines and equipment, which costs R15,000-R20,000 per month.

Then there is the labour, fuel and maintenance for the mobile clinic that constantly roams the district looking for animals in distress, collecting unwanted animals, giving mange treatments, dipping, vaccinating and deworming.

And finally none of this could be coordinated without the office administration and kennel facilities, which also costs a considerable amount.

And all of this is achieved by a very small group of very dedicated people. Five committee members, one fundraising person, one finance person, (all volunteers), five kennel staff, and a handful of dedicated volunteers who help in the office, manage the thrift shops, book sales and help with fundraising events.

We need every one of our community to start being more interactive with your SPCA. Contact us via portalfredspca@gmail.com, 046-624-1919 or 081-280-3178, WhatsApp 082-676- 8605 (which is also our emergency number) or our SPCA Facebook page.
