Festive cakes raise money for charities

Lions’ Christmas tradition continues

- MARK CARRELS

It’s that time of the year again when you can have your Lions Christmas cake and eat it. At the affordable price of R160 to satisfy your sweet tooth and to celebrate, in keeping with a 48-year Lions tradition, the service organisation has gone out of its way to keep prices low. The delicious fruity 1kg Christmas delight is pegged at a similar cost to last year

and there are enough cakes in stock available for your cupboards or pantry as Lions have been able to increase their order from the bakers.

The Christmas cakes made exclusively for Lions, uses a unique recipe that originated in Australia.

Australian Lions allowed their SA counterparts to make use of the same recipe and this has proved a successful fundraising project in both countries.

The cakes were first sold in SA in 1975 and, over the years, the sales have assisted Lions Port Alfred with their many community projects.

The cakes, presented in an attractive box and weighing 1kg each, make a very useful gift for staff, clients, family and friends.

An added benefit is that the long shelf life allows the cake to be stored and used in those “emergency” situations.

“Last year we sold out of cakes on the last weekend of November and had many customers contacting us in December,” Lions president

Alec McKerrow said. “The reasons for this was twofold, one, was that some clients had eaten theirs and, secondly, the public became aware of how nice a gift it is to give to clients and friends.”

The money collected from the cake contributions is helping the Lions with their outreach projects and is an important part of their fund-raising initiative.

“We, as a service organisation, were inundated with requests for assistance last year and, if it wasn’t for the wonderful public who bought our cakes, we would not have been able to achieve much,” McKerrow said.

“To assist us in our drive to assist needy communities we are hoping that we can, and we will, sell all our cakes.”

McKerrow said they will be selling the cakes at both Rosehill and Heritage Malls, however, the cakes are available from any Lions Port Alfred member.

“We will be delivering cakes to Makhanda, Bathurst, Kleinemonde and Kenton areas. Please support us as it helps us to support our needy communities.

“Money generated from the cake sales in the various areas will be ploughed back into those areas, for example, Alexandria’s Jehovah Jireh and Huis Diaz.”
