KGB Tuesday October 17
A day with no rain forecast saw 41 players enter the draw to play an Alliance Stableford 2-scores-to-count competition with the potential of a bonus point for a “sandy’, a par from a bunker.
The sun shone but the easterly wind gusting into the mid-30km/h range moderated scoring potential as Nick Oosthuizen, Russell Warren, Bob Shaw and Matt Chadwick took first place on 85 points.
John Crandon, Arnie Schultz, Bryan Robinson and John Dell were pleasantly surprised to find their return of 82 points realised second place on the day.
Trepidation as to the Hamer & Sukkel position saw much to and froing but Heinz Czepluch, Derick van Harmelen, George Lake and Keith Rugg swept the opposition aside with 70 points to secure the trophy at prize-giving.
Arnie Schultz and Nick Oosthuizen both birdied the par three sixth hole but James Lobban with his birdie on the 11th hole secured the carry over 2-club pool for his covey.
Possibly indicative of what many felt were good scoring conditions, without factoring in the strong easterly wind, Nick
Oosthuizen with an individual 70 nett was the only golfer to deserve mention at completion of the day.
Friday October 20
A fresh easterly wind that freshened as the morning progressed could not dissuade 54 players from entering the draw with the promise of a KGB fish ‘n chips luncheon at the conclusion of proceedings.
Our draw master was forced to temper himself as he drew entrants into two 3-balls and twelve 4-balls to contest an Alliance Stableford 2-scores-to-count, with the standard bonus point available for a “sandy”, a par from a bunker.
Sailing home in first place were Arnie Schultz, John Crandon, Lynn Lake and George Lake on 89 points to finish winners.
In joint second were Mark Warren, Bob Shaw, Jan Immelman and Hein Barnard, with Yvonne Hill, Henry Ellis, Tom Tagg and Rick Hill, both coveys on 86 points.
Possibly feeling the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune may apply, Tony Halse, Pat Halse, Lawrence Schultz and Greg Thomas came home with 70 points to take out all competition for the Hamer & Sukkel with 70 points.
Arnie Schultz birdied the par three eighty hole and Lindy Krige and Bob Shaw both birdied the par three sixth hole.
Lindy and Bob, playing in separate coveys, ensured a carry-over 2-club pool.
Derek Sinclair, Eugene Erasmus and Mark Warren shot individual 70 netts: Paul Fryer and Peter Longhurst shot individual 69 netts: Yvonne Hill cast a shadow upon these men with an individual 68 nett; clearing the podium for Arnie Schultz with a superb individual 65 nett as player of the day.
A highlight to conclude proceedings was Arnie Schultz’s eagle on the 14th hole.
