BOWLSBANTER

-

PORT ALFRED

Let’s start with the A and B greens.

Thanks to Jaco van Rensburg and his workers, the banking and installing of rubber is nearly complete.

On the bowling front, our annual prize-giving was set for Tuesday of this week where bowlers and croquet players received awards for their achievements during the year.

This past Friday, 14 medics from Johannesburg, Gqeberha and East London enjoyed a morning of croquet and bowls. R820 was raised from drinks and entry fees.

When asked, opinion was divided on whether they preferred croquet or bowls but nevertheless, a lot of fun was had. Many thanks to all members who helped.

Our triangular, a fun annual event, is set for November 18 and 19. Live music has been arranged for Saturday evening while Brian and the Bandits will also take the stage in the fun event.

Our annual classic will be a mixed event for the first time. A lot of behind the scenes work is being done with entries standing at 14 at this stage.

The Radue-sponsored tabs-in afternoon was won by Rose Wood (skip), Julie Sluziuk and Henry den Oever. Runners-up were Peet* van Rooyen, Sheila Pearce and Martin Leonard. Well done all.

KOWIE

Tuesday afternoon was a beautiful sunny day and it was wonderful to be part of the tabs competition. The team that won the generously sponsored Rosehill SPAR vouchers was that of Judy Alexander and her team of Mike Ryan, Rob Walker, and part-time farmer, and part-time bowler, Theo Kemp.

Wednesday morning’s session for the novices and golden oldies was again, well attended. It was pleasing to see our pair of “swallows ” , John and Beth Kirk from the UK, honing their skills on the adjacent rink.

With the B green beautifully prepared and running true as always, Thursday’s turnout for tabs was pleasing, and there was a hive of activity during the afternoon.

With lots of close games, the afternoon’s champions were Judy Alexander (again) and her team of Peter May and Bugs Wilmot, who all went home with meal vouchers from Graze by the River.

Friday evening saw the first round of the night bowls.

The competition will be played over six rounds, and weather permitting, the final is scheduled for December 8. With a nearly full house of teams competing in this year ’ s competition, teams have been divided into A and B sections.

Cyprian Guard, the competition organiser, welcomed all the teams and thanked the two major sponsors, Pick n Pay and Buildit for their support.

With the club’s new lighting system installation on the C green, it was great to see the teams enjoying the fruits of night bowls under floodlights. A huge thank you to Andrew Meyer and his team who sorted the lights out.

The winner of the first round in the A section was the Air School team. In second spot was the Siyakhula Trading team and in third place was the A1 Pre-owned Auto team. In the B section, the leaders are Pick n Pay, second are Enviroglaze, and in third spot is the team from Pam Golding.

The second round will be played on Friday, November 10.

The highlight of this week’s calendar was the Kowie-hosted

BOWLS VICTORS: triangular, which is a competition held annually between Kowie (four teams) Walmer 8th (four teams) and a combined team from Kei Mouth (two teams) and Morgan Bay (two teams).

The first two rounds were played on Saturday afternoon and two games on Sunday.

The teams from Kowie bared their (friendly) set of dentures, and at the end of the day, lead the competition. Kei Mouth/Morgan Bay were in second spot with Walmer 8 in third place.

Sunday morning saw an early start to day two. Again, the weather was bowler-friendly and the greens played as true as normal.

After the final two games were decided, lunch was served, and the prize-giving began.

Team Kowie was named the Triangular champions, with KeiMouth/Morgan Bay as runners-up.

This year, the “Friendship Trophy” went to the team from

Walmer 8. The highest scoring team of the competition was Kowie’s Mike Tomlinson’s “Vandals” team of Andrew Meyer, Mike Ryan, and Debbie Slattery who won 37 points out of a possible 40 to ensure Kowie took top honours.

The club president thanked the tireless Dave Thomas for running a successful tournament. Also thanked, were Judy Alexander and the team in the kitchen for the lovely food, Andrew Meyer and his bar staff, Stan Long and his team for marking and prepping the greens, and also Sally Moffat for helping with the scorecards. A big shout out to Multi Security for the wonderful sponsorship.

Lastly, Dave Thomas thanked all the visiting teams for their continued support and was looking forward to seeing everyone again next year.

Terry Gillham, from the Kei Bay team, reciprocated, thanking
