Alex Angling Club beat rivals to hook title
Alexandria Angling Club members reeled in another title when they beat their rivals from Port Alfred Rock & Surf Club in their annual competition between the Fish River and Kleinemonde on Saturday November 11.
Port Alfred has won the competition 20 times, with Alex coming out tops on 12 occasions with only one stalemate in the competition, which was first held 32 years ago.
“A big thank you goes out to the Alexandria Angling Club for joining us on the beach and at the prize-giving where great camaraderie followed after a hard day’s fishing.
“It’s really great to see the clubs support this annual angling competition,” said PA Rock & Surf chairperson Gary du Randt.
The water was not too cold when the lines hit the ocean from as early as 6am, and galeforce winds did not stop the two clubs from getting their anglers out on the beach, where 79.86kg of fish was caught.
Once the battle lines were drawn between the two teams, everyone had a great time on the shoreline.
“From walking miles to look for the fish, to finding the odd one and hooking it, to be released safely to swim another day, a good time was had by all.
“It was a case of wind, wind and more wind but that didn’t stop us catching a total of 11 species,” said Du Randt. The Port Alfred team reeled in 39.19kg of fish and the Alexandria anglers 40.67kg, with the latter winning the title by a narrow 1.48kg.
“Well done to all that fished and thanks to all who put the effort in and all those who braved the weather conditions.”
The shield was handed over by Port Alfred’s oldest angler to Alex Angling Club’s Jeff Hilliar.
