KGB Tuesday November 21 2023
The forecast of clear skies and a moderate westerly wind confused many, as early morning rains saw 33 players report to the draw and contest an alliance stableford twoscores-to-count with a bonus point for a “sandy”, a par from a bunker, in three three-balls and six four-balls.
Despite the dampness and fresh wind, overall scoring was good, proving once more that local golfers play better in the wind, as John Abbott, John Ralph, Michael Collins and Don Thomson claimed first place with 92 points. Keith Buttemer, Tom Tagg, Eugene Erasmus and Paul Fryer came home second on 91 points. The fight for the Hamer & Sukkel was cut and thrust but no outright winner was determined as Dave Curran, Tony Halse, Andy Stembridge and Keith Rugg; Ross Grainger, Arnie Schultz and Nick Oosthuizen (80+5); Peter Reed, Zandile Jakavula and John Dell (80+5); as well as Peter Longhurst, Derick van Harmelen, James Weisters and Andy Barnes all shared the trophy on 85 points. A note for the record books for this trophy to be shared by four coveys on such a high score.
Peter Reed birdied the par three eighth hole but Andy Stembridge with his birdie on the par three sixth secured the two-club pool for his team.
Bob Shaw shot an individual 70 nett; Andy Barnes improved with an individual 69 nett; Paul Fryer increased the tempo with an individual 68 nett; clearing the podium for Andy Manson as he came in with an individual 65 nett, as player of the day.

Grey overhead but a forecast of good weather conditions saw 48 entrants into the KGB draw to compete in an alliance stableford two-scores-to-count format, with the now normal bonus point for a “sandy”, a par from a bunker.
No variations were introduced by the draw master as everyone in the KGB field had entered the NSRI golf day, where they were also playing a betterball stableford competition.
Drizzle was the order of the day and the westerly wind remained sedate by local standards as Peter Longhurst, Andy Stembridge, Derick van Harmelen and James Weisters finished in first place on 96 points.
In joint second were Jan Immelman, Nick Oosthuizen, Matt Chadwick and Russell Warren in a tie with Bruce Carlyon, Jimmy van Rensburg, Maureen McGarvie and Donald McGarvie, with both coveys on 95 points.
John Dell birdied the 14th, normally the eighth, only to see Andy Stembridge also birdie the 14th, and Peter Longhurst birdied the 12th, normally the sixth.
Andy and Peter playing in the same covey took the two-club pool, ensuring all spoils on offer went to their team.
Good scoring was the order of the day as Fanie Smit, Gaby Hausmann and Donald McGarvie all shot individual 70 netts; Len Bohnen and Heinz Czepluch shot individual 69 netts; Bob Shaw and Jimmy van Rensburg shot individual 68 netts; upping the ante, Andy Stembridge, Dave Curran and Hein Barnard shot individual 67 netts; clearing the floor for Russell Warren, to walk on water, as he returned home with possibly the round of the year as he shot an individual 59 nett.
