BOWLSBANTER

-

PORT ALFRED

The highlight this past weekend was the staging of the Champions Tournament at this club on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.

The event was for the singles winners of the various clubs to compete against each other.

The two singles champions representing this club were Hein Strombeck and Jenny Frost.

Unfortunately only three male bowlers competed, namely Hein, Willie Basson of Kenton BC and Andrew Meyer of the Kowie BC.

Nevertheless some brilliant bowls was played by both male and female players with Annemarie Calitz of Albany and Basson emerging the winners.

The men’s winner was decided on shot profit with Hein losing out by a fraction of a point.

On Saturday afternoon, players were met with fine drizzle with those who arrived for tabs-in deciding not to complete 18 ends. However, players were greeted with lovely weather on Sunday.

At the lunch after play, Eastern Areas president Judy Alexander labelled all those who played as “true champions”.

Coming up this weekend is the Harry Owsley Mixed Classic with 22 teams having entered.

This will be followed by a three-course Christmas lunch set for December 9.

Last Tuesday, tabs-in was sponsored by Kekkel en Kraai with the team of Brian McLean, Edie van Rensburg and Bill Wragg

winning the vouchers. KOWIE

Tuesday afternoon saw a good turnout for the tabs competition. Good bowling was the order of the day, and the most consistent team was the all-woman team of Avice Steenkamp, Linda May, and Lina Woodard, who all went home with a generous voucher sponsored by Time4Biltong

NIGHT BOWLS

Tuesday evening saw round three of night bowls being played under floodlights.

The winners of the night in section A were Plumbrite, and Section B it was Kowie Toyota. The overall winning team for the night, on a full house of four points and a shot difference of +19 was Kowie Toyota.

The event organiser, Cyprian Guard, reminded all the teams of the fourth round which would be played on Friday evening.

There was a good turnout to our novice/golden oldies session, with some good bowls being played again.

Wednesday’s Christmas dinner was well supported.

It was decided by the committee to outsource the catering to the trusted hands of Chef Andre, who owns the local Rise Cafe eatery. To say that the food was fantastic, would be an understatement.

With round bellies and maybe one tipple too many, the fun evening was ended by Judy Alexander thanking Debbie Slattery for organising the event,

the team behind the bar led by Andrew Meyer and lastly, she thanked the caterers and all the members and their spouses who made the evening a huge success.

Thursdays tabs was played in superb weather, with a host of close scores reported. At the end of play Judy Alexander and her team of Mike Ryan and Brian Shelly dominated the last couple of ends to win the Niche sponsored meal vouchers.

In the men’s chosen pairs game between “Silver Fox” Stan Long and Lenny Clark convincingly beat Justin Louw and Sean Wiblin.

NIGHT BOWLS

Essentially for business bowlers, Friday evenings are fun at the Kowie BC.

The fourth round of the everpopular

night bowls series got underway on schedule and produced some good bowling.

The winners of the A section for the night was A1 Pre-owned Auto, while the B section winners Foresthill Construction, were the overall winners with four points and a shot difference of +17.

After the fourth round, the leaderboard shows that Foresthill Construction are now leading on 14 points +25.

Mike Tomlinson, the event organiser for the evening thanked the main sponsors, Pick ’n Pay and Buco.

He also thanked the Lions Club for their tasty snacks, the team behind the bar, and lastly, the participants for supporting the event.

With rain being predicted, the weather on Saturday wasn’t conducive to bowling and only a handful of members handed in their tabs.

The bragging rights for the day went to John Hubbard and his able team of Bugs Wilmot and Ann Gillfillin.

CATHCART CLASSIC

Over the weekend, 24 teams from the Border district and surrounds travelled to Cathcart to play in their annual Meat Classic.

Jacques Krige’s team of Clive Bartlett, Jonty Alexander and Lenny Clark ended in sixth position, while Stephan Minnaar’s team of Dave West, Michael van der Sandt, and Rodney Austin ended 10th. A great weekend was had by all.

OUTINIQUA MEAT CLASSIC

The Kowie team of Pieter Stegmann, Denny Richardson, Cyprian Guard and Peter May played in the Outiniqua Classic.

The team battled on the first day of competition but ended on a high note by winning their last three games.

Again, a great time was had by all.

KENTON

We note with sadness the passing of Anthony Copeman.

An avid bowler who was known fondly as Copie, he became president of the club in 2018 and served in this role until 2021.

His skill as a bowler, coupled with the calm persona of a true gentleman, will live on forever as part of the ethos of Kenton*

Bowling Club.

I’m sure all members both old and new join in expressing our sincere condolences to Marietjie and family for their loss.

“There is nothing ever permanent except change. ”— Heraclitus

If it is change that is the only certainty, then the Wednesday competition was no exception.

The Continental Restaurant, which has been a loyal club supporter for years, has changed both ownership and name to the Volo.

The all new restaurant, padel courts, area revamp and so on, will most certainly bring change but true to Kenton tradition, the new owners are happy to continue sponsoring the competition that has become a feature of our club.

The first Volo tabs-in competition drew a full house of 12 teams of fours battling it out over 21 ends with no less than three teams bagged the full 10 points on offer.

Kevin and his team were on 10 +7, Mo and team on 10 + 12, but it was the mysterious visitors from Port Alfred, skipped by Jaco, who scooped the prize with an almost unbelievable 10 + 27.

Apart from the local competition, the weekend also saw Cecelia Immelman and Willie Basson play in the EA Champion of Champions tournament in Port Alfred.

Hot off the press is the news that Willie is the new EA Campion of Champions. Congratulations.

Teams also travelled to Schoombie to play and will undoubtedly return with news and stories of bowling and kuier-ing as only true bowlers can do.
