History in full colour at Historic Bathurst AGM

- NEVILLE LANCE

Tuesday December 5 saw a well attended (more than 60 people), AGM of Historic Bathurst, held at the Pig and Whistle Hotel in the village.

Tom Barrett has chaired Historic Bathurst for the past 10 years, and he and his team as always have made this past year another bumper one for the society.

Barrett managed yet again to keep everybody right up to speed with what is happening in and around this very historical village during the course of his annual report, which was well rewarded with a framed acknowledgment of his services over the past 10 years, promising recognition of his services in the form of honorary life membership.

As always at these meetings the treasurer’s report needed to be presented, and Steve Gipson got his over quickly, once again showing the very healthy state of affairs that this remarkable village finds itself in with the help of a few happy and workable Historic Bathurst affairs, of which the Music at the Mill early summer picnic is

The man is truly a fountain of knowledge with respect to the history of these parts

probably one of the most successful in fund-raising terms.

Following the AGM and a short break to replenish refreshments, Alan Weyer, a legend in these parts, spent about 30 minutes educating the audience in the most engaging and entertaining manner regarding the history of the Eastern Cape, right from Bartholemew Dias and Vasco Da Gama, through the ages of the Khoisan, right up until the heart of the frontier wars that consumed our part of the world just prior to and after, the arrival of the 1820 settlers in Bathurst.

The man is truly a fountain of knowledge with respect to the history of these parts, and manages to enthrall his audience with his colourful descriptions and anecdotes, and amazingly enough all without the assistance of any notes whatsoever.

A big shout out to Alan — it really was an extremely entertaining and educational presentation.
