Talk of the Town

HALF THE STREET IT USED TO BE

-

There’s a street next to Kingswood College, which runs between Currie Street and Albany Road. Actually, it’s half the length it used to be, originally stretching from Burton Street on the Kingswood campus to Albany Road.

Then, half of Fordyce Street was incorporated into the Kingswood campus, and we’re left with half a street.

Incidentally, Fordyce Street was not named after that famous long-distance road runner with the blonde hair and finely-tuned frame, but after Colonel J Fordyce who was killed in the war of 1850 and 1851. In fact, the conservatory in Makana botanical gardens in Makhanda was erected in his memory.
