BRONZE FOR ST ANDREW’S Bathurst

-

The St Andrew’s College rowing crew, 10th at last year’s SA Schools’ Boat Race on the Kowie River at Port Alfred, put in a brilliant performance on Saturday to finish third overall in the junior men’s category of this year’s event, sponsored by Standard Bank. The Makhanda crew beat Rondebosch Boys’ High School from Cape Town in the B final.

Overall winners, for the fifth time in a row, were St Benedict’s College, beating fellow Johannesburg school St Stithian’s College in the A final.

In the junior women’s A final, St Mary’s School beat St Andrew’s School for Girls to win the title for the ninth consecutive time. Both schools are also from Johannesburg.

Makhanda’s Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) finished 10th overall, after an absence of several years from the event.

This year’s bronze medallists, St Andrew’s, finished 10th last year, seventh in 2021, fifth in 2019, sixth in 2018 and runners-up in 2017.

The 2023 St Andrew s squad comprised James Stapylton-Smith, Aiden Wood, Joshua Herring, Max Estcourt, Connor Moorcroft, Joe Kroon, Nicolaas Swart, Josh van Renen, Callum McMurray, James Jarvis and Chris Jarvis. one of a kind!

GRAEME HOSTS BIG CRICKET

Makhanda will experience an ‘invasion’ of the cricketing kind from December 1620 when Graeme College hosts the 2023 Khaya Majola U19 Interprovincial Cricket Week over five days, bringing hundreds of players, officials, family members and supporters into the city.

EP is the host province, while Graeme College, celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, will serve as the tournament headquarters and host the main match of each day’s play.

Matches will be contested at Graeme, Kingswood College, St Andrew’s College, Salem, Cuylerville and Manley Flats, while players and staff will be accommodated at Kingswood and St Andrew’s.

An added bonus for Graeme is that the daily match played on its main cricket ground will be televised live on DStv SuperSport channel 216.

Graeme deputy headmaster Gregg van Molendorff said it was “incredible” for Makhanda to host such a big event.

He said: “Many B&Bs, hotels and restaurants will be busy in a period which is normally quiet in Makhanda. We look forward to celebrating the flagship schoolboy cricket tournament in Makhanda, and working together with EP Cricket to make this event a success.”

Match details were not available at the time of writing.
