Talk of the Town

THEY’RE OUT AND ABOUT

BUSINESS BLITZ

The newly-appointed Makana Municipality safety and community services director, Ntombesizwe Notyeke, wasted no time in getting involved in her new position last week.

Together with the SA Police Service (SAPS), municipal officials and the portfolio chair, councillor Vuyolwethu Vayo, they visited shops and stores on the

An item in this column a couple of weeks ago mentioned that two traffic wardens had been appointed in Makana Municipality’s traffic department. Talk of the Town spotted one of them, in full uniform, ticketing a white sedan in Allen Street at lunchtime last Friday for being parked in a bay, but facing oncoming traffic. Wonder how much the fine was?

LEADING THE WAY

Belmont Golf Club has a new committee in place and comprises Allen James (president), Graham Hains (captain), Marc Paul (vice-captain), Megan McCallum (ladies’ captain), Kirsten Wilmot (secretary), Chizum Richardson (treasurer), Deon van Deventer (manager), Angus McRae (greenkeeper), and Monica Strydom and Pieter Oosthuizen (committee members).

RAIN KEEPS MANY AWAY

It’s that time of the year when Makhanda starts thinning out, population-wise, as it were, and when one adds persistent rain to the mixture, it’s no surprise that last Saturday’s parkrun in Makana botanical gardens was at a low 30 participants.

Visitor Heath Webber has 348 parkruns to his credit four in Makhanda and he joined the three local triple-centurions at Saturday’s parkrun Stavie van Aardt 384, Peter Stockwell 382 and Lynne Marshall 356.

Parkruns are held at 8am each Saturday from the entrance to the botanical gardens in Lucas Avenue.

CUTTING AND TRIMMING NEEDED

Thanks to the upgrade of the R67 between Makhanda and Port Alfred, it’s a very smooth drive these days, and the road will soon be buzzing with cars, SUVs, 4X4s, trailers and caravans as holidaymakers flock to the coast from up north.

Pity, though, that the super smooth ride will be somewhat spoilt by the sight of overgrown verges that need mowing, and tree branches that need trimming.

It will be quite a mammoth task, stretching from Stones Hill in the hills outside Makhanda to Port Alfred on the coast. In particular, the section between Langholm and Bathurst needs urgent attention.
