Community development and resilience in Boesmansriviermond
In 2023, the
(BRRAG) focused on various aspects of community management and maintenance. The committee members consulted with Ndlambe and other institutions to address issues related to water, sanitation, village maintenance, roads and drainage, safety, security and environmental matters.
The workforce, including three employees, community members, and contracted personnel, was instrumental in maintaining the village.
A key service provided was the maintenance of beach facilities during the festive season, ensuring cleanliness and functionality.
A significant achievement for BRRAG in 2023 was the leasing of the Boesmansriviermond
Village Town Hall.
The lease was secured after a lengthy process involving cooperation with the ward committee and Ndlambe officials. Renovations began in September to restore the town hall for community use, including activities like kickboxing, church services, art exhibitions, and markets, along with providing virtual office space and conference facilities.
BRRAG also addressed damages caused by a tidal surge and storm. The group conducted a survey and reported damages to Ndlambe, including at Skinderboom, the Jetty, the boardwalk, and the tow path and river beach.
The dune ablution block was damaged beyond repair and slated for demolition. Repair efforts, costing around R250,000, were supported by the community, business partners, and Ndlambe.
BRRAG faced challenges in municipal service delivery, particularly in water, sanitation, waste management, and environmental issues. These reflect broader national challenges.
For 2024, BRRAG plans to continue partnering with Ndlambe municipality and other stakeholders. Future projects include negotiations to have the village declared a special rating area under the Municipal Property Rates Act.
The group intends to focus on improving water and sanitation services and addressing environmental issues.
BRRAG aims to continue its community-oriented efforts, facing future challenges with support from the community and business partners.
