Helping to make life better for others
Kenton Rotary organises numerous projects, fundraisers
Our biggest fundraiser was completed early this year when the target of R1.2m required for a NSRI station to be established in Kenton was achieved.
This money came from residents and other property owners as well as local organisations including Rotary.
A jet rib vessel and a Suzuki tow vehicle will be permanently stationed at Kenton’s Middle Beach, currently in a converted container.
The vessel was blessed on December 16 and named the “The Spirit of Kenton”.
Projects
We continue to contribute funds and volunteer labour to the Siya Soup initiative which distributes about 5,000 meals a week to our local communities. Kenton Sees is a sixmonthly project that provides free eye and vision tests for local residents.
Davis Optometrists of Makhanda and our local optometrist Graham Chrich provide their services and standard glasses for free.
The last clinic, on November 21, assessed more than 100 people.
Patients with cataracts and glaucoma have been subsequently assessed in Makhanda and will receive corrective procedures early next year
The Sunshine Coast Hospice received the funds raised through our annual pigeon race.
Jehovah Jireh Haven in Alexandria receives funds from Rotary in support of the work they do for orphaned children.
The pedestrian pathway from Robby’s Corner to Cornerstone is currently being paved, and the work is almost complete. This was funded and managed by Rotary.
We also maintain, on a quarterly basis, the existing paved pathway to Middle Beach.
Rotary has also contributed to a consortium which is currently repairing the storm damage at Middle Beach.
We continue to support the Fish n Chip initiative that provides blankets and infant clothing to single mothers when they leave the local clinics with their newborn babies. The Tree of Joy project provides some Christmas cheer to local people who otherwise would have no joy during the festive season.
We also facilitate a monthly snare eradication walk through Kenton’s public areas in conjunction with the Kenton Conservancy.
Rotary is also very involved in youth services in the local schools. A funds donation was given to Nompucuko Combined School’s matrics for their Intervention and Incubation Camp.
A self-development talk was given at Klipfontein Primary School and a swim camp organised for the AntiPoaching Unit at the Kariega Game
Reserve and youth from the Kariega Foundation.
Three of our members are qualified mediators via the African Rotary Community Mediation Initiative and are readily available to ”empower communities to resolve disputes’’.
Events and fundraising:
A saxophone and dinner event, master wine tasting classes and a raffle during the Kenton Wine Festival.
Rotary Kenton-on-Sea annual golf day at Royal Port Alfred Golf Club.
A Greek evening at the Dias Fishing Club.
The small-boat race at Bushmans River beach (late December).
We hope to continue to build on the above next year and provide assistance where possible.
