Support for community health, wellbeing

-

“We serve the community.” The Lions Club of

is part of the world’s largest service organisation and we are proud to be of service to those in need. Unfortunately, we ca not get to all those that need assistance but we try our best, because of financial restraints and manpower.

We believe that all the money collected goes straight back into the community wherever that is, Port Alfred, Makanda, Kenton or Alexandria.

Should the need ever arise where a natural or manmade disaster occurs in our area/region, we can apply to the Lions International Community Funds for assistance. They are based in the US.

Since the start of our clubs’ new year, our president Lorenda de Klerk has continued with a number of projects and in the new year hopes to bring in a number of new projects.

In the past six months, we have assisted the Port Alfred High School’s archery club with funds, held ongoing steak evenings, assisted the SPCA, and Hospice, donated necessities and spoken to Kuyasa High School girl matriculants regarding health matters.

Our ongoing free diabetes testing was successful and glasses have been given to a number of people with poor eyesight thanks to DM Radue Optometrists.

After a couple of years break, we were able to present Sunset Park residents with a lovely meal.

We have also been afforded the opportunity to serve food at Kowie Bowls Club Nite Bowls.

With service goes fundraising and we realise that the Port Alfred business community can only donate a certain amount per charity.

We would like to thank all the businesses that support us to buy the diabetes testing equipment, pay for glasses, fill show boxes with nourishing goodies and necessities, buy a washing machine for SPCA and have wheelchairs repaired.

Our two major fundraising events are our golf days in Port Alfred and Alexandria and our Christmas cake sales. We will deliver Christmas cakes to the essential services staff on Christmas Day and the old age homes prior to Christmas.

We will continue to assist Jehovah Jireh and Huis Diaz in Alexandria, Kuyasa High School in Port Alfred, plus get more involved in old age homes across the area. We will also continue to pay maintenance on security cameras in town and pay for fuel for the beach security quadbike.
