Please donate school items for children’s home

- ANNELI HANSTEIN

The Jehovah Jireh Haven (JJH) in Alexandria has made a heartfelt appeal for donations of urgently needed school supplies.

As the start of the school year fast approaches, the haven has asked the community to assist by donating school stationery, books and bags for about 50 children who are of schoolgoing age, who live at the centre.

In past years, a sponsor supplied the children with what they needed, but unfortunately cannot assist this year.

Anyone who would like to make a monetary contribution can contact Candice Barnard on 068-260-9121.

If you have any items to donate to the children’s home, such as hard cover books, mathematical instrument sets, pencils, blue pens, erasers, rulers, scissors, sharpeners, glue sticks, flip files, exam pads, ring files, colouring pencils, school bags, and so on, they can be dropped off at TOTT’s offices at 29 Miles Street, Port Alfred.

“There is nothing more heartwarming than seeing the smiles on the children’s faces when they have all their needs and get ready for school – the joy, the excitement,” said Barnard. “Their faces just light up.

“A little goes a long way and without the help of you, the community, none of this would be possible.”

The children’s home was started by Molly and Neels Bam more than 31 years ago, with no funding or subsidy from government.

The couple has kept the home running with the generosity and support of the public.

They have opened their home as a place of safety to abused and orphaned children in the area. Currently, they look after nearly 70 children between the ages of three months to 18 years.

They use about R12,500 weekly for food, consumables, school supplies, nappies, baby formula, and so on, for the 70 children and 20 adults who receive three meals a day.

In 2010, JJH was registered as both a non-profit organisation (NPO) and a public benefit organisation (PBO).

However, the home does not receive any funding from the government and relies solely on donations and sponsors to keep afloat and operational.
