A slight lull after Christmas dinner saw 20 players ignore the forecast of light rain to be drawn in five four-balls and contest an alliance stableford two-scores-to-count with a bonus point available for a “sandy”, a par from a bunker. The rain did not materialise and with but a light easterly wind conditions were ideal for golf as Fanie Smit, Riaan Smit, Andre Smit and Keith Rugg finished in first place on 85 points. Paul dos Santos, Derick van Harmelen, Jan Immelman and Andy Stembridge were second with 83 points. Not too far adrift on 81 points, the Hamer and Sukkel was shared by Brian Hayward, Patrick du Preez, Michael Joubert and John Abbott along with John Dell, Dave Curran, Don Thomson and Andy Manson.

The highlight of the day was delivered by Ben Erasmus with a hole-in-one on the par three 13th hole using a seven iron to the awe of watching seniors and family. Fanie Smit was best golfer of the day with an individual 70 nett.

The final KGB round of the calendar year saw 44 players drawn in eleven four-balls to contest an alliance stableford twoscores-to-count with bonus points available for a “sandy”, and a “Portuguese”, a bonus point if three players returned three points or better on the same hole.

The easterly wind pumped and temperatures were cool seeing golfers donning additional clothing as they played the first few holes.

Andries Pienaar, Paul dos Santos, Mike Stadler and Don Thomson combined well to finish in first place with 84 points.

Nick Oosthuizen, Jenny Ralph, Andy Stembridge and Michael Collins were shaded into second with 83 points. With many coveys finishing in the seventies, and on tenterhooks, Peter Longhurst, Quentin Hogge, Brian Reid and Dave Curran were magnanimous in capturing the spirit of the festive season to secure the Hamer & Sukkel on 67 points. John Dell and Greg Thomas both birdied the par three eighth and as no other two-clubs were recorded, the pool carried over.

Tuesday January 2 2024

A fresh easterly wind and relatively cool conditions, for the festive season, saw 41 golfers report to the draw master and compete in an alliance stableford two-scores-to-count with a bonus point for a “sandy”, in three threeballs and eight four-balls. Andy Manson, Don Thomson and Russell Warren (83+5) tied for first place with Derick van Harmelen, Peter Longhurst, Michael Collins and John Abbott on 88 points, excellent scoring under the conditions.

Nick Oosthuizen, Steve Kennedy and John Ralph were adrift of competitors as they recovered from New Year celebrations to total 74 (69+5) points and secure the first Hamer & Sukkel to decorate a table in 2024.

Don Thomson birdied the par three sixth; Gareth Raath birdied the par three eighth; but the carryover two-club pool went to Len Bohnen, and his covey, with his birdie on the par three 11th. Paul Fryer shot an individual 70 nett; Andy Manson and Peter Longhurst both shot individual 69 netts: with player of the day Rick Hill returning with an individual 68 nett. Ricky Barresi came home with a 75 gross that included an eagle on the par five ninth.

Friday January 5 2024

The easterly wind showed no remorse as it greeted 51 players drawn in one three-ball and 12 four-balls to contest an alliance stableford two-scores-to-count format, with the normal bonus point available for a “sandy”. Handling the wind better than most Nick Oosthuizen, Paul dos Santos, John Dell and Andy Barnes shared first place with Mark Warren, Brian Hayward, Gaby Hausmann and Heinz Czepluch, both coveys on 88 points.

The Hamer & Sukkel was just as closely contested and a merry-goround ensued as Ricky Barresi, Derek Sinclair and Paul Fryer (70+5) passed it to Andy Stembridge, Keith Rugg, Jan Immelman and Brian Reid who duly passed it to Peter Sinclair, Andrew White, Len Bohnen and Don Thomson for it to share equal prominence on their tables at prize-giving for a shared score of 75 points. Brian Hayward with his birdie on the par three sixth took a substantial two-club pool for his covey, no other two-clubs being recorded. Yvonne Hill shot a fine individual 70 nett and James Lobban was player of the day with an individual 69 nett.
