BOWLSBANTER
KOWIE
All good things must come to an end is a truthful, but sometimes hurtful, cliche. This week saw a lot of our members showing symptoms of the “empty nest syndrome”, as family and friends said their farewells after having spent the festive season together.
It was also a week of welcoming back Jonty and Judy Alexander who had recently spent their Christmas holidays with their UK family.
Tuesday afternoon tabs competition was reasonably well attended. The team that won the Time4Biltong vouchers was that of Jonty Alexander, who found his* line and length almost immediately after his month away.
The rest of his winning team, was Peter May and Lina Woodard.
Playing in super warm weather, Wednesday morning’s novice/golden oldies practice session was well attended, where Basil Clark, among others, excelled.
Because of the gusting winds, Thursday afternoon was not pleasant for bowling.
Nonetheless, the afternoon’s tabs competition, which was sponsored by Graze by the River, was deservedly won by Dave Tyrrell and his willing team of
Bugs Wilmot and Rob Turner.
Saturday afternoon was a perfect day for bowling, but disappointingly, only a handful of
members submitted their tabs.
After a hard-fought game, the bragging rights went to Pieter Stegmann, Denny Richardson,
Peter May and Margaret Stegmann.
With the festive season now well past us, hopefully by next week we will see our members coming out in their droves, and flooding our beautiful greens.
KENTON
After the hectic family filled festive season, one would have thought that bowlers would be resting up but no, there were full turnouts for tabs-in on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Lots of visitors to the club brought news of the outside world while engaging in conversations over a friendly game of bowls.
Undoubtedly the highlight of this week was the annual Choc-ablock competition, made possible by the late Rob Smith.
It was his vision to hold an event to attract newer bowlers and afford them the opportunity to play with more seasoned exponents of the game. And wow!
It certainly did just that and taxed the data wrangling skills of Lydia Palmer to the full, as more and more people arrived and not one but three draws were required to match games and rinks.
Finally 50 bowlers all but filled two greens for lively trips and pairs, which eventually saw the team of David Freeme and Esme Berg emerge victorious. The Smith family were welcomed and a perfect afternoon of bowls was rounded off by their generosity in providing wine to accompany the after game snacks.
Next week, it’s onto the serious stuff with three ladies’ teams and one men’s team competing in the Eastern Areas fours at Grahamstown Bowls Club.
